The rooms at the Grand Islander are amazing, and I liked the property enough that I’ll return, though next time I may try the owners towers. I just wish rooms had microwaves and fulltime refrigerators. There was so much food waste. I think they may be set up this way so people will opt for suites, but a place this nice should still offer guests some basic conveniences. The only microwave is at the DiamondHead General Store, in the back, and you have to buy something there. That feels kind of shady, though the bro who works there is nice about helping.
I stayed over MLK weekend, when the hotel parking lot is blocked off annually for a parade. We had to move our cars by 8:30 AM, and the hotel’s notice about it showed no sympathy for the hassle. They offered no help, not even alternate parking locations or extra checkout staff to help people retrieve cars before the deadline. I wasn’t impressed by the lack of thoughtfulness or customer service.
We’ve been trying to book this vacation for 2 years, but none of the dates have worked for us. Now, after we prepaid over $800, you’re charging a $20 cancellation fee. I’m disappointed in the customer service and policies. It seems like predatory practices.
The grounds are beautifully maintained, the staff are welcoming, and the views are spectacular, whether you’re looking toward the ocean, gardens, or pools. It feels like a self-contained village with just about everything nearby. From arrival, the place gave me the feeling of stepping into a tropical paradise. I could relax or find activities without leaving the resort, which makes it a destination in itself. I can’t wait to return! The location is a big plus: right on Waikiki Beach, with lovely views and shops and restaurants close by. Families may especially like the lagoon. But the resort felt dated and crowded, and check-in was slow. Staff were polite but seemed overwhelmed. Our room was comfortable, though nothing special for the price, and housekeeping was inconsistent. Some parts of the property could use a refresh. The pools were pleasant but often packed, so finding a spot was hard. Dining was decent, but overpriced, with long waits at most restaurants. For the high cost and crowds, I expected a more polished stay. It’s not a bad place, but people seeking a true Hawaiian getaway may find better options. I might stay again, though I’d look at other resorts first.
