St. Charles Hotel

We wanted a simple, clean place for one night during a quick day trip through Hudson, and that's exactly what we got. The main street's shops and restaurants are an easy, pleasant five-minute walk away. The front desk was helpful, and breakfast the next morning had eggs, sausage, waffles you make yourself, and coffee. My husband and I would definitely recommend it.

The St. Charles was such a disorienting, unnerving place that my time in Hudson, NY felt almost outside ordinary reality. It seemed like a fourth space, something out of Interstellar (dir. nolan, 2014), with spacetime torn apart. The place defies categorization. The staff felt almost like phantoms. I have no prejudice against them, but getting anything like what most people would call service was nearly impossible. We waited at the desk for ages when we arrived, even after trying to contact the receptionist. Since our rooms weren't available until 4 p.m., we left our bags and wandered around the beautiful town. We came back at four to get keys. There were three couples in our wedding party, all with reservations, but one reservation wasn't honored for reasons we couldn't understand. We showed the paperwork, receipts, and confirmation numbers, but it got us nowhere. The proposed fix was a cot for one couple to share in another couple's room. Staff didn't try to improve the situation or offer even a weak apology. They were dismissive and resistant. Since we had wedding events to attend on time and none of us could get into our rooms because of alleged short staffing, I rushed to get ready in the lobby bathroom after a long discussion with the receptionist. We were told the rooms wouldn't be habitable until midnight, which was when we planned to turn in anyway. The next day, several key cards didn't work, causing another hour of stress. Hospitality should mean being hospitable, but there was none at the St. Charles.

I had a wonderful week here. The little hotel is beautiful and peaceful, with antique shops and a spa nearby. The manager and the room service lady were both very kind. I'd definitely stay again 🤗

The room was at least somewhat clean, and the place is kind of interesting, but I was close to giving it one star. The receptionist was about as cold as could be, which felt strange. The room was small and had just a queen bed. There aren't many choices in the area, though I wish we'd driven a bit farther to somewhere like Great Barrington.
