The room was pretty basic, but the bed was comfortable, and there was a fridge, TV, and a very comfortable leather recliner. The heater worked great and the shower had recently been upgraded. My wife was pregnant and a bit disappointed that they would only give us two extra pillows. The pool was nicely designed, with a rock waterfall and two hot tubs that made the area feel peaceful. Breakfast was much better than I expected, with waffles, eggs, sausage, oatmeal, or cereal. The hotel is right downtown across from the theater, two blocks from memorial hall, and within a five-minute drive of lots of restaurants. For a small town hotel, I was very pleasantly surprised. I grew up in Independence and always wanted to go there as a kid, but moved away before I could. I finally came back 35 yrs later. I’d recommend it and hope to return someday.

The pool and hot tub were out of order, which was a letdown since we’d booked a jetted tub room. That tub had a pubic hair in it, and only lukewarm water. There was no hot water in the rest of the room either. The toilet barely wanted to flush, the bed was nothing but springs, and the lights over the bed were burned out. There were no trash bags in the bins. The mini fridge was broken inside, so our things wouldn’t stay put and rolled out whenever we opened the door. The “cable internet” was having trouble, so we couldn’t even watch TV. We left around 7p because the room was so disgusting. When I complained before we left, they offered nothing. Only as I was leaving did they offer another room. I highly recommend finding somewhere else if you’re after a romantic night. They won’t refund you either. The front desk told me to go through hotels.com, but hotels.com said I had to deal with the hotel. Just the usual runaround. I’d never recommend this place to anyone.

Richard and Amy were great, and the owners made me feel welcome. I felt safe here, and breakfast was good. Reception wash great, and when we needed extra blankets, getting them was no problem. The night shift were nice and helpful.

At breakfast, the owner asked if I belonged there. I showed him my key and asked if it looked like I belonged. He said he was the owner and that I didn’t look like I belonged there. I told him I’m a business owner too, and that having a title means nothing without professionalism. He followed me to my room. When I came out, I said it was a teachable moment: I understand homeless people may come in and try to eat for free, but his approach was reprehensible and stereotypical. He walked off. I told him he was so used to looking down on people and talking to them however he pleased that he couldn’t accept someone speaking to him from a position of power. I was recommended this hotel, but the ownership and property are horrible. I had an ‘Executive Suite’ on the ground floor with no window lock, then moved to another room where the lights were dim. This hotel needs to be removed from all travel advisory lists, inspected by the city for compliance, and given a change of leadership.

This stay wasn’t anything like the hotel I remembered. I attended Independence Community College almost 30yrs ago, and back then the place was incredible. My girlfriend, now my wife, enjoyed staying here with me. We booked the executive suite this time, a $12 upgrade, but the early 90’s decor looked like it wanted to be returned. Someone should call Tim the tool man Taylor for repairs. There were silverfish, repeated water damage on the ceiling, and drywall missing in places. Some lights didn’t work, and some fixtures weren’t even there. The suite’s hot tub had what looked like pubic hair in the drain, and water kept leaking from the faucet. The night staff cooked something at the front desk that smelled like Frito’s corn chips, meaning dirty feet, if you know, you know. I wouldn’t recommend staying here. Look elsewhere.
