We were charged $150 for two nights even though we were supposed to pay at the property after arriving, and we never got the access code we were meant to receive. The owner didn’t show up. At 9 pm, he called to say he had a doctor's appointment, but never refunded us. Expedia couldn’t help, and we lost the money without ever meeting the host.

The house I was taken to was in terrible condition, with stains, insects, a bad smell, and no lock on the door. I called Booking.com support and stepped outside to find somewhere safer. The host has multiple properties, and although I’d booked the first one weeks before my trip, he said it was double-booked and drove me to this one in an extremely filthy car. While I was still on the call, he came back yelling, grabbed me, and tried to punch me. I had to run through the streets with my bags while he chased me, and support heard it all live. Both properties are in a neighborhood with a high crime rate and felt extremely unsafe. It was one of the scariest experiences of my life. If I hadn’t been fit or had someone with me, it could have ended badly. Stay safe and find a better place.

Many places nearby close surprisingly early, so the area felt isolated. The living room was unfurnished and wouldn’t work well for a group or family. If you’re traveling alone and don’t care much about comfort or atmosphere, it might be fine, but I wouldn’t recommend it otherwise. The room was fairly clean, but the stairway leading to it was dirty. There were just two towels and no washcloths, and the bed could use a better cover. The house was uncomfortably cold; even the small space heater I was given later didn’t warm it much. Things went badly from check-in. I’d booked for a New York event, hoping to save money, but after only a few hours the owner knocked on my door, upset about a negative review he thought I’d written. I offered my hand, but he ignored it and started a tense confrontation, ready to evict me without checking whether I was responsible. It was an uncomfortable, unprofessional way to start a stay when I’d barely settled in. The savings weren’t worth the hassle. I wouldn’t recommend staying here, and if you’re going to New York, I’d choose somewhere in the city even if it costs more.

The owner dismissed our complaint about the room and ruled out any refund or compensation. We felt our concerns were ignored, and he accepted no responsibility. In our view, the place seems to cut corners at guests’ expense, both on cleaning and service. The condition we found was unacceptable for paying guests who should be able to expect basic hygiene. The room was filthy. The bathroom had lots of loose hair on the floor and in the shower, visible stains, grime, and an unpleasant odor. The carpet was stained and sticky, and we didn’t feel comfortable sitting down or going barefoot anywhere. The whole place looked so squalid that we couldn’t feel at ease. It seemed like cleaning and maintenance had been neglected for a long time, not just missed once. Later, the Booking.com reviews seemed completely out of step with what we experienced. Many positive comments looked suspiciously generic and repetitive. It made us strongly suspect that reviews might be manipulated, through fake reviews or only selectively publishing positive feedback, which also cast doubt on the accommodation and the owner's conduct.
