I’d always seen the Westin - Itasca as an upscale place, especially since I’ve lived right nearby most of my life. When my AC at home broke this week, I booked a couple of nights there while it was being fixed. It was the closest option, so I figured a little stay-cation would work. The room wasn’t very cool when I arrived around 10pm. Changing the thermostat and fan settings didn’t help, so I called the front desk. Maintenance came up about ten minutes later, found a really dirty filter, and replaced it. He said that was probably the problem and that the compressor was cold and working fine. He also explained the units only run on low, so the thermostat’s three fan speeds don’t actually change anything. Still, the room never cooled down. The thermostat showed 60°, but I doubt it got below 70°-72°. I asked to move rooms and was told the hotel was full. I stayed two nights and it was okay, but the place felt dated and not especially fancy, much like other cheaper hotels around here. If, like me, you want strong, cold hotel AC, this Westin probably won’t suit you.

The pool area was a highlight for me: there’s a hot tub that spills into a nice pool, and the tall, two-story space has a big window facing a pleasant patio with trees. In summer, it looks like the doors slide open so guests can lounge outside. I also liked the updated gym on the 12th floor. The hotel has a 12-story atrium with glass elevators, a bit like an Embassy Suites. Downstairs there’s a coffee shop and restaurant, plus cushioned armchairs where you can read or get some work done. My room was recently renovated and spotless, with nice finishes. The bathroom stood out, especially the beautiful shower and rainfall head. A great property.

The restaurant was pretty good, and the lobby atrium has lots of open space. It’s a nice venue, though the pool is a little tucked away and the wood finish on the beams could use some maintenance. The lake side pavilion was closed.

Even with a big wedding happening and the open atrium layout, I didn’t hear any bothersome noise in my room. It was quiet and I got a good night’s rest. The staff were friendly, too.

Business travelers, be aware. I’m a Marriott status holder and stay over 50 nights a year, but management still charged me the full room cost when a flight cancellation meant I had to cancel that same day. I explained both things when I called, and they still applied the cancellation fee. This kind of thing unfortunately comes up during regular business travel, and this is the only Marriott property that’s done it to me in the past year.
