JB Motel and Cottage

Getting the deposit back has been a mess. I booked a “no charge” reservation through booking.com and was charged a deposit right away. I eventually managed to cancel, but weeks later I still haven't received a refund. The property won't return my calls. When I did get through once, they said booking.com had to refund me, while Booking.com says the property is responsible. Terrible service.

The room was cozy, clean, and mostly as advertised, though the walls are thin enough that we could hear people in the adjoining room late at night. Based on the stay itself, I can see why someone might give it around four stars. My one-star rating comes from dealing with the owner. We ended up in the wrong room because he gave us two different room numbers, one by text and another in the Airbnb listing. Someone else was meant to be in the room we entered, and they couldn't get in because we had locked the door. The next morning the owner woke us up and yelled at me for supposedly not contacting him. I had texted back the day before. Until then, I hadn't noticed that the number he texted differed from the one in the official listing, and I think room details should match. I tried to talk it through calmly, but he shouted me down at the door and later brushed me off online. He also left a libelous review about me on Airbnb. Maybe your stay will go smoothly, but if anything goes wrong or there's a misunderstanding, my experience was that the owner was defensive, condescending, and unprofessional, with no sympathy or willingness to take responsibility when he was at fault.

I was delivering food for uber and mistakenly pulled into the parking lot. Two young men were smirking and laughing, and looked like they might be up to no good. As I left, a black woman yelled at me not to come back while putting a chain up behind me. I called the number listed for this “business.” They said they aren't connected to it and are only contracted by them, but as far as they know the place is permanently closed. Apparently, it's no longer in business. IDK what shady business is going on here.

I don't get the bad reviews from James R and others. The place was clean, with no bugs or dirt, and the furniture was nice and so new it even smelled new. We had a river view. The pool is at a sister property a mile south, which the ad clearly explains. I can only assume the bad reviews are from local competitors.
