Whispering Pines

They gave us a different room from the one we booked, and the heater was broken in the winter. When we complained, they told us to leave right away and did nothing about the heat. The owner even threatened to make sure we could never come to the June Mountain area again. Worst motel in the world, with no common sense or basic courtesy.

For a two-star hotel, this was the finest one ever. The owners were fantastic and accommodating, and the location was perfect for a weekend on the hill. I’ll definitely be back.

The hotel and Hotels.com websites advertise free cancellation, but there’s a $25 service charge to cancel. When I called to ask about it, the person on the phone was rude.

We came to Mammoth for a week of skiing between Christmas and New Year’s. By early November most nearby hotels were booked, so June Lake seemed like a good choice: fairly close and less crowded. I specifically wanted a working hot tub or jacuzzi, and Whispering Pines motel clearly advertised an indoor hot tub and spa. I checked the website carefully because I’d seen other hotels mention a tub but also say it was out of order. All we needed otherwise was a small kitchen and enough room for four to sleep. We arrived around 4 pm and found our key in an envelope taped to the office window. The office was empty. The room was spacious, but parts of it were badly run down. The first morning the coffee maker didn’t work. I went to the office at 10 am, but it was locked and no one was there. I called the hotel number and spoke to someone off site, who arrived half an hour later with a replacement. I also asked about the hot tub and was told it was out of order. That was more than annoying, since I could’ve booked one of several better-maintained hotels for the same price if I’d known. I showed him the loose kitchen flooring that slid around, and he just shrugged, like it wasn’t his job. He was pleasant enough, but the manager or owner is openly hostile, never on site, and apparently won’t hire anyone for the hotel office or front desk. The room’s tiny water heater only gives you about a three-minute shower before the water turns cold. We won’t recommend this place or stay there next time we visit.
