The owners were friendly, reliable, and had the room I’d booked by phone ready and clean when I arrived. Check-in and checkout were quick and easy, and the location is handy but far enough from the highway to stay quiet. It’s an older place, but they keep it spotless and provide the usual things like a fridge, microwave, towels, soap, and shampoo at a better price than a corporate hotel. It’s refreshing to stay somewhere run by the people who own it. I didn’t look for an ice machine and didn’t see one, but the little freezer compartment in the room’s mini fridge made some ice overnight. Great stay.

This is a great value, and the new family owners are doing a great job renovating an older property. Joe and Gail were so friendly, and hearing about their efforts and the stories from this journey was a treat. Ask them, and you’ll hear some amazing stories. Please give them your business so they can keep upgrading the place. Thanks for helping travelers get a good night’s sleep.

Really clean room, and the people were nice and good-natured. There isn’t much happening in town, but there are a couple of gas stations and a restaurant serving breakfast from 6:30. The Badlands entrance is only about 20 minutes away. I’d happily stay more nights and use this as a base to explore the area.

Granpa Joe himself welcomed me with water and directions and suggestions for the badlands and nearby sites while Gail checked me in. He also pointed out the free postcards and hats, gave me a poster, and offered candy. Later, I went up for help with the Wi-Fi and wound up spending an hour or more chatting with Joe in the recliner set about life and small-town politics. It gave me a great laugh, and I left wishing I passed through Kadoka more often so I could visit him. I booked by phone with Gail(Gale?), who was incredibly helpful and attentive. Grandpa Joe’s Place is the motel I’ve always wanted to find. It’s the cleanest I’ve ever stayed in, with pristine bathrooms and linens and not a speck of dust or a cobweb. The way they treat guests stood out even more than the already above-average cleanliness.

Quiet at night, well lit, clean, and clearly cared for. No interstate noise, and the room cost about a third of what I’d pay in Wall or Rapid City. At check-in they gave me complimentary water and a free hat.
