The pub is great, and the grounds are lovely. Everyone on staff was really friendly, too. The rooms need attention, though. The furniture is very old, the keys gave us trouble, and the rooms had a musty smell. Our AC made a loud booming noise whenever it kicked on, waking us several times each night. The advertised breakfast buffet was closed for our whole stay, and the Valentine's dinner was cancelled as well. The inn still lists a firepit and other amenities that aren't available anymore. It would be great if they updated the information and the rooms.
The courtyard is beautiful, and the pool area is lovely. The Guadalupe River is just across the street, with access at Guadalupe River Park a little farther down the road. The rooms are on the small side, but they were clean and nice for the price. I really enjoyed staying at this historic Kerrville hotel. It was built in 1958 and is one of the oldest hotels still operating in town. They don't make places like this anymore. If you appreciate historic spots, you'll probably like it here. I hope you give it a try.
Johnathan and Allison at the front desk were courteous and professional, and made me feel welcome right away. The property is beautiful, and the restaurant and bar on-site were excellent. I had one of my top three stays ever at the inn of the hills. The buffet was very good and reasonably priced. Rooms 341 to 346 are in a building in the middle of the property, with a sort of private pool outside rooms 341, 342, 343, and 344. It seems great for family gatherings. The conference center is huge, with a full kitchen that can serve at least 1000 people. Very impressive place, and a must stay if you're going by Kerryville TX.
The place looked cool, but after this experience I won't contact them again or recommend them. We had already paid through Hotels.com, but when we arrived the clerk said they don't accept reservations from internet companies and had no room for us. I showed him the email confirmation with the payment, and he repeated that they don't work with Hotels.com. Hotels.com quickly found us a room nearby in Kerrville after I called them. The clerk was a jerk, acted as if it was my fault, and offered no help or alternatives.
The lobby and conference center are beautiful, and the staff at Inn of the Hills in Kerrville were consistently kind and polite. They really did try to help us, and I appreciated their efforts. The hotel rooms, though, made this the worst stay I've had in my 43 years. I was there for work, since the conference where I was speaking was on-site and the room had been booked for me. We had to change rooms twice before ending up in a third that was at least manageable. The first room was upstairs, and as soon as we opened the door we were hit with a strong stale, moldy smell. My daughter and I both get migraines, and she couldn't tolerate being in there. I travel with room spray and disinfectant, so I tried airing it out by turning on the AC and briefly opening the door, but the odor was overwhelming. The next room smelled just as bad, and its AC was set to 40 but blew hot air. Some rooms seemed to have original knob controls, while the last room had a newer digital pad. A manager overheard me at the front desk and stepped in, moving us to a downstairs double across from the pool. That room was manageable, but the restroom ceiling had visible mold. The carpets in the rooms were disgusting, and the room itself was small and outdated. It looked like some rooms may have had partial renovations, but the carpet throughout and restroom ceilings were in very poor shape. Every room we entered had a coffee pot in the restroom. The fridge in the last room was loud and completely frozen inside. The noise was another major problem. The walls are extremely thin, so we could hear full conversations next door, every footstep upstairs, water running and pipes vibrating when people used showers, sinks, or toilets, and people walking or gathering outside. We didn't sleep for two nights, and I'm really not exaggerating. We even went to Walmart to buy new pillows to try to get comfortable. The building was built, I believe, in the 1960's and has no elevators. If stairs are hard for you, or you're traveling with small children or heavy luggage, I'd strongly recommend asking for a downstairs room. I try to be fair in reviews and wouldn't want to hurt a business, especially since the staff were so helpful and kind. But the condition of the property made our stay very difficult, and the rooms really need updating. If smells, noise, or outdated accommodations are a concern for you, this may not be a good fit. If you do stay, I'd strongly suggest a downstairs room and earplugs. My daughter and I tried white noise on YouTube on our phones and wore AirPods at night, but still couldn't get rest. I'm sharing our honest experience to help others plan.
