We’ll keep coming back to Happy Bear, and it’s only because I literally can’t afford a DUI. Last weekend was our fourth stay, and the location is the whole reason: it’s right across from Pickle Barrel and Wobbly Barn, two of the most important spots on the mountain aside from maybe the ski trails. The price is fair for what it is. Heat works, sheets are clean, and the staff are friendly and courteous, though savvy, so don’t try sneaking an extra guest past them. I’d gladly pay another $200 a night for a few hundred more amenities: adult-sized towels, a shower that reaches above my belly button, and a parking lot that isn’t a wet ice skating rink. They meter occupancy by giving each room just two bathroom towels. Someday my friends and I will buy the place, fix it up, and make it look more like the Ritz than my mom’s basement. Fox News comes in fuzzy. There’s nowhere to plug in a phone except behind the 1999 college dorm fridge, perched on an old wooden chest that doesn’t open.

I called to ask about prices and availability for an upcoming long-weekend ski trip. The man who answered was friendly at first, and the location near Killington Ski Resort was appealing despite the concerning reviews I’d seen. But when I asked how old the bedding and sheets were, since they looked pretty old in the Google pictures, he got upset and impatient. It seemed like a reasonable question to me. I wouldn’t recommend this place.

The owners were nice, but the rooms had such a strong mothball smell that it was hard to sleep. I expected the place to be old and run down when I booked, but not to smell that awful. It shouldn’t have three stars, and I suspect the good location is the reason it does.

The owner/manager was quick to respond whenever guests needed something. Breakfast wasn’t being served because of COVID, but there are several places along the strip, including SunUp Bakery, which is amazing. We also borrowed the snow removal equipment he had on hand to clear our car after an overnight snowfall. The rooms were very clean and a decent size, the beds were comfortable, and each room had a fridge and microwave, which is handy for a stay of a few days.

Renovations are underway and looking awesome. The new owners are hands-on and excited about what’s coming. Some finished rooms are already available to rent. Load up your mountain bike and stop by.
