I’ve eaten at the Kilmarnock, inn several times over the past year, and each visit has disappointed me. I kept hoping it would improve because the reviews are good, but I won’t go back. This complaint is about lunch last week. I ordered oysters, and when they finally came, the smell and taste made it clear to me they were bad. I tried just one, couldn’t get the taste out of my mouth, and felt physically sick. The waitress was kind when I told her, but said she tells her friends and family not to get seafood there because it comes from China. That’s hard to understand in the Northern Neck, where the seafood is wonderful and the oysters are famously good. I also heard someone else comment that their drinks were watered down. My first drink tasted awful, like cranberry juice watered down, and I’d swear there was no liquor in it. What kind of restaurant has servers telling people the seafood is no good and that they’ve heard nothing but bad reviews about it?

The staff made us feel welcome and right at home, and the place was comfortable and charming. We had a wonderful visit while seeing friends in the area. The food was excellent, and the holiday atmosphere was so festive it felt like stepping into a Hallmark movie. We’d happily come back.

We didn’t stay at the Inn, just ate at the restaurant earlier this month, and the evening was a huge disappointment. We’d booked a 5pm reservation for four to celebrate our friend’s 79th birthday, hoping for a private room and a reasonable finish so the birthday couple could get home. We were promised a private room but seated in a booth behind another couple. After we told the server about the birthday, we ordered cocktails. All four, priced at $18-$20 each, tasted watered down with no alcohol flavor. I mentioned it after one sip and said we’d send them back for wine, but the server offered to bring more alcohol to add. They still tasted bad. Our appetizers took ages, and when we asked about them, the waitress was rude. After 2.5 hours we were still asking when the meals would arrive. We had to track her down again about dessert for the birthday, then once more for the bill after 3.5 hours. We tried to pretend the night was fine to make our friend’s birthday special. The cost was $100 per person for poor service, bad drinks, and mediocre food. I’d never want to repeat it.

The cottage looked freshly painted and was very clean, and we were greeted at the desk with a big smile. I love sitting on the little porch, listening to the fountains and taking in the landscaping. Dinner and breakfast were exceptional, and the wait staff were great. We always look forward to mini vacations at this special inn, and last weekend was no different. Can’t wait to return!

We had eight rooms for a family wedding and got to keep enjoying time together when we returned, while the grandchildren laughed and played in the lovely courtyard. The accommodations were beautiful and refreshing, with a quaint feel, and the food was outstanding. The staff were wonderful and hospitable. Our whole family would recommend this gem.
