We’ve returned to the Grand Hyatt Kauai five times now, and it’s still our favorite Hyatt. Travel bloggers may rank Park Hyatt Tokyo or Thompson Madrid higher, and they’re both fantastic, but for a romantic Hawaii escape with the right mix of comfort, location, and relaxation, this is hard to beat. The property could use some renovation in spots, though it’s still in pretty good shape. The pool setup is outstanding, with room to cool off in either the grotto and lazy river or the ocean-view saltwater pool. Free self-parking is a welcome perk, especially at a luxury hotel. The Grand Club helps with breakfast costs and has complimentary drinks through the day. Its staff are wonderful, and Jenny deserves a mention for sending us off with fruit and granola bars on our last day. It made our flight out of Kauai feel extra nice. You can also set out on coastal hiking trails right from the property, which is great if you want to explore without a car. My main complaints are the very dated bathrooms and a shower that definitely needs an overhaul.

The grounds are beautifully kept, and there’s plenty to do nearby, including golf, walking trails, and the area around the resort. We borrowed bikes and rode around, and also enjoyed some small classes and activities. Staff were helpful throughout. Our room was clean, though the mini fridge barely cooled anything. We ended up carrying ice from the machine every day and packing it around our food and drinks in zip lock bags. The location is great, and the beach and pools are lovely, but the pool water can be chilly and the sand pool isn’t always clean, partly because of inconsiderate guests. I also saw a father repeatedly bring toddlers in diapers and arm floats into the adult pool and lazy river despite the signs. By the pools, the Captains bar has the same food as Hale Nalu. The nachos and poke tuna were solid. Tidepools was excellent, with fresh, well-prepared food and top-notch service, and Honolulu coffee shop had quality espresso and friendly, professional baristas. The luau dinner was a letdown: the food was mediocre, and dessert ran out before anyone at our table had finished eating. The entertainers, though, were great, and the upbeat musicians made the show fun. Recommended.

Robin made our six-day stay especially lovely for the kids. On his first day working at the Grand Club, he showed them the native flower Ginger and made little fish from plant leaves. He treated them like any other guests and took time to interact, which felt just right for the island. The valet, front desk, and Grand Club teams were all phenomenal too. We had a spacious room with a partial ocean view, but the bathtub could use an upgrade, the chain lock was loose with a screw sticking out, and I wish each bed had four pillows instead of three. It’s a very family-friendly resort, with daily koi feeding, a parrot exhibit, and books and puzzles to borrow at the cultural centre. There were plenty of complimentary lounge chairs by the lagoon and pools. We found the lazy river a little overrated, but enjoyed our visit and hope to come back. The L'uau is worth attending, with great entertainment, pretty good food, and an open bar that felt worth it. Thanks again, Robin, for being so welcoming.

The Grand Club staff made this trip memorable, especially Sina. We met her our first night, and from then on my kids wanted to go back every morning to see her. She shared tips about things to see and do on the island and made us feel at home with her kindness. Even when the club was busy, she made each visit feel special. We missed her on her days off, though she certainly deserves them. I hope Hyatt knows how wonderful she is. I’d recommend this hotel because of her alone. Greg at the pool also made our time by the water more fun, and everyone else we met on staff was lovely. We visited during a colder, rainy week, but the people there still made our stay special, and we’ll be back. The lobby had gorgeous views and felt magical when we arrived. My son spotted the little pineapple garden right away, and the whole property is beautiful. I almost never write reviews, so it took me a while to post this, but the memories were too special to leave unsaid. I’m so grateful we met Sina and had such a meaningful stay. Thank you, Grand Hyatt Kauai.

Poipu Beach is a short walk away, where turtles come up onto the sand near sunset. The hotel itself was just okay and could use upgrades: a microwave in the room, a better fridge, and a screen door that locks at ground level by the pool. The shower felt great but was confusing to turn on. There was a bidet, though I didn’t try it, and I did enjoy the always-warm toilet seat. The restaurants were very overpriced, and none of the dishes had a memorable flavor. The rice was overcooked and the fish dry. The $54-per-person breakfast buffet was actually better. About five minutes away, a small mall is served by the hotel shuttle. I had really good coconut shrimp at Scott Brown’s, I believe that was the name, and found a comfy Kauai sweatshirt at a shop. My best meal on Kauai was at Aloha Thai Kitchen in Waimea, authentic Thai food and worth stopping for after hiking the canyon.
