The location is convenient, just off highway 69 in a scenic area, with a c-store a short walk away and a Dollar store across the street. There’s also a little moat with frogs and small fish. The front desk clerk was kind and helpful, and we only needed a room with doubles for the night. I’d stayed here a couple of years ago and remembered it as nice. That’s changed. The hotel is in terrible shape now. The parking lot was pitch black, and it didn’t feel safe. Hardly anyone was there. They no longer offer a comp breakfast, just coffee and a muffin, and parts of the ceiling looked like they were coming apart. We switched rooms twice. Both smelled strongly of mildew and felt damp. The mattresses were so old and worn that they sagged in the middle. The carpet was filthy, with stains that looked like vomit or feces and white powdery stuff embedded in it, like cocaine. The TV was so small I thought it was a computer screen. The AC in the first room was set to 61 but still blew warm air. The bathroom was the worst. The toilet looked like someone had peed in it and it needed cleaning. There was stagnant, moldy water in the tub, and the caulking was moldy and coming apart. It looked like there were blood splatters on the bathroom door jamb. I wish I’d taken pictures, but by then I just wanted to leave. We got a refund and drove to Beaumont for the night. This place needs to be condemned or torn down and rebuilt.
We left as fast as we could after finding signs that pointed to possible bed bugs. With our four small children, we couldn’t take the chance. The room smelled musty to me, while my husband thought it smelled like smoke covered up. He suggested checking the beds, something we’d never felt the need to do before. The stains underneath were disgusting, whether or not they were bed bug blood. We turned the mattresses over completely and checked every crease. We found a few dead bedbugs, mostly on the floor, and hoped maybe an infestation had been dealt with. But on one mattress there were black dots that looked like bed bug droppings, and in a fold we found eggs and exoskeletons. We never saw a live adult bug, but those signs were enough for us to leave and tell the front desk about the possibility. The clerk wasn’t rude, but said she couldn’t do anything about the night rate we’d already paid. We’d chosen the place partly because it had a pool, and expected a Super 8 to be decent since it’s a big chain and we’d had good experiences before. But it isn’t a Super 8 now. It may have been one before, but it’s just Motel Kountze. The pool was drained and closed, which disappointed the kids, though we were only staying a night. Save your money and don’t stay here.
Bed bugs all night. Absolutely disgusting. I’ll never stay here again.
The location is nice, but they badly need to upgrade. The room smelled like smoke, and the beds felt like nothing but springs. My husband and I stayed over the weekend, and our backs, necks, and whole bodies hurt afterward. These seem to be the original beds from 20plus years ago. You’d sleep better in your car.
The desk service was fine, and the outside and lobby looked okay. But the room, 128, had serious problems. Both spring mattresses were worn out and visibly sagging in the middle. I tried the window-side bed first and could feel springs coming through on the left. The one by the door was a little better, but not much. We made do because it was the only room left. The bathtub faucet kept dripping, so we had to shut the bathroom door to muffle it. The room smelled musty, possibly from the leak or from the HVAC not drying the air properly. The breakfast food was stale, including the waffle mix. I usually only leave feedback when things are great or bad enough to need fixing, and these beds really need replacing. We had planned to stay at the Relax Inn, but my wife didn’t think it looked good, even though its ratings from repeat guests were better. Looking back, I would have stayed there instead. My daughter has just moved to the area, and there are other places fairly close by, so Super 8 has been dropped from the list for regular visits. Until the owner or manager updates the beds and handles maintenance, I’d go elsewhere if you have another choice and want a good night’s sleep. The beds are really bad.
