The general manager later reached out with an apology and reimbursed us, which is why I'm giving two stars. Still, I'm worried nothing at the hotel has changed. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in La Plata Md. from 19 Feb. to 21 Feb., and it was far too expensive for what we got. I've stayed at Holiday Inn Express hotels around the world and usually enjoyed them. This one was a huge letdown. I picked it because the IHG app showed an appealing pool, but on arrival there was a sign at reception saying it was out of order indefinitely. The nightly rate hadn't changed. The lobby restrooms also had "Out of Order" signs, and nobody appeared to be working on them. The location felt dangerous to me. I was away during the day, but at night what I saw nearby had me hurrying my child inside. Both nights, the third-floor hallway near the elevator reeked of marijuana, apparently from nearby rooms. I'm a government employee and can't risk anything showing up in my urine because of hotel negligence. A positive test, whether within legal limits or not, could cost me my job. Luckily I didn't have to take one, but this could put someone else in that position and lead to legal action. Drugs in a hotel affect people. Our room wasn't serviced: towels were stacked just inside, the bathroom was dirty, beds hadn't been made, and trash hadn't been emptied. The bathroom had chipped paint, a large mark on the wall, a dirty tub and curtain, and an unclean toilet. Looking up in frustration, I noticed black marks across the ceiling that looked like mold. Breakfast was undercooked, made in a microwave or oven, and served with paper plates, plastic cups, forks, and knives. Staff were rude and unprofessional. Only the receptionist on the night we checked in greeted us; breakfast staff just stared when we said hello, and the other receptionists seemed uninterested. There was no hospitality. This was one of the worst hotels I've stayed in. The other guests seemed sketchy, which might explain the drug problem. I won't return, and I've already warned people in another review and will keep doing so. It's not a good place for working people: after a hard day, dealing with combative, lazy staff and all these problems is bad enough, and the risk of a bad urinalysis makes it worse. I hope someone higher up looks into it.

We appreciated how friendly the staff were, and the hotel was beautiful and very clean. Our room, 411, felt spacious and comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. The woman looking after breakfast kept everything fresh, hot, clean, and well stocked. Our second night, 11/27/25, was peaceful and quiet. The first night, 11/26/2025, was a different story. My family went to bed at 10 PM, then just after midnight the guests in adjoining room 409 woke us up. They were talking loudly, there was banging or bumping against the walls, and their TV was so loud we could hear muffled sound and feel vibration. It sounded as if they might be in the hall, but we didn't open our door for safety. My husband called the desk and spoke with Collin, who said he'd come up. We heard him knock; things went quiet for about 15 minutes, then started again for a while. Everyone, including my five-year-old granddaughter, was woken. My family eventually got back to sleep, but I couldn't. I have insomnia, sleep lightly, and can't sleep during the day or while traveling. I got under two hours, though I normally need 6-8 to function. We were all exhausted on Thanksgiving. We paid good money for a nice hotel, and this kind of disruption shouldn't happen here or anywhere guests are paying to stay. We plan to visit our MD family for five days in March, but we'll choose a different hotel because we're worried it could happen again. Sleep matters, and I hope nobody else has to go through this. I tossed and turned all night. We'd like management to contact us about this. We also want to thank the staff for their hard work. Respectfully, Simon & Tricia Corbin

Once I got in, the room was clean and roomy, with the usual hotel amenities. The bathroom had Dove products, the bed was comfortable, and I watched college football on a TV that was set up well before dozing off. I do wish the pillows were fluffier. Breakfast the next morning had great choices, and the bean-to-cup coffee machine made me smile. The hotel stayed busy through the evening. I showed up around 1pm hoping for an early check-in, but the receptionist curtly told me check-in was at 3pm and no rooms were clean yet. I was bummed she didn't even pretend to check the computer. I accepted it and went down the street for coffee, then returned caffeinated and right at 3pm. A different receptionist had everything ready, and was friendly and efficient. A decent stay overall.

After a nine-hour drive, the hotel was easy to find, but checking in around 1:30 in the morning was followed by a horrible surprise. The desk woman was rude, and the room was disgusting. I booked a king bed and sofa bed so my two kids could sleep on the sofa, but there was no sofa bed, just a couch, so we all had to try to fit in one bed. The website photos were misleading. The couch and chair were stained and gross, there were brown water marks on the ceiling, and the room smelled awful. The toilet wasn't firmly attached and sounded like it might fall apart whenever we used it. I won't stay here again.

Early check-in was appreciated, and the location was good. After that, the stay was a letdown. My room had a beer cap on the floor, dirt on the couch and bed that I had to wipe off, a dirty fridge and microwave, peeling paint, and a streaky mirror. The hallways and elevator looked worn, the pool wasn't clean, and there was no hot tub despite it being advertised. I could hear noise from the hallway, other floors, and cars outside, so the rooms clearly didn't block sound well. The website pictures gave a misleading impression. This felt nowhere near a 4.1-star hotel.
