The lodge itself was fine. It’s huge, and our room was nice and roomy. We spent about two hours in the pool area that night, and the breakfast buffet I’d paid for ahead of time was very good, especially the man making omelets. The booking situation was frustrating. I reserved a family suite in early February for myself, my husband, and our two three-year-old grandsons, for Friday, Feb. 13, on our way home from Disneyworld. I paid $35 for insurance in case plans fell through. My husband got sick, so we stayed an extra night at Disney and called Great Wolf to move our booking to Saturday. They said it would cost another $275. When I mentioned the insurance, I was told I could hold the room for another time, but because the promotion had ended, that would still cost extra. Canceling meant losing my $495 deposit. I agreed to pay more rather than lose the nearly $500 already paid, and then they gave me a “break,” charging just $175 more. My advice: don’t waste money on the insurance.

Our baby loved the toddler pool, and the kids had the time of their lives. The water park could have been warmer, though. A few friends’ babies got so cold they were turning purple. We still had an awesome stay and will definitely return for our little one. If you choose the right dates, the price can be very affordable. Our room included two water park admissions, and our baby was free, which made it a good value for the family. The property is huge, with lots of activities for every age. Our room was clean and comfortable, if a bit dated.

On this visit, our room was right beside the service elevator, and every time it ran we heard a loud bang against the wall, hard enough to see the wall move. Outside the window was the rooftop below, with a machine that ran very loudly every hour. It’s only the first day of our four-day trip, and already we’re fed up. This will be our last visit. The hotel has started charging for parking, even in its own lot, and has removed the vending machines. Now there are signs telling guests to buy drinks and snacks from the tiny market downstairs, where soda costs $4 and a bag of chips is $3. The nickel and diming feels ridiculous and greedy. We’ve been here four times. It can be expensive if you don’t use coupon codes, but there are always codes available. The hotel restaurants are pricey, so we usually eat just a couple of meals there and get takeout from local restaurants for the rest. Staff are always very friendly. The rooms don’t have microwaves, apparently to push people toward buying food at the hotel restaurants, but people just order locally. My kids always have fun here, though. We rent a cabana so I don’t have to race for a chair and guard it. Packages vary, with things like a stocked mini fridge, a restaurant meal, a TV, towels, and refillable soda cups. Next time we’re going to Wilderness at the Smokies.

On our first day at the Wolf Lodge, my husband and I were putting our sons down for a nap when two strangers unlocked our door and nearly walked in. We heard them say, “Oh crap, there’s somebody in here,” then leave quickly. I don’t know how or why their wristbands gave them access to our room, but it feels like a safety issue. We checked out a day early because we didn’t feel comfortable. When I checked out, Bianca, the customer service representative, was rude and seemed like she didn’t want to help. I wasn’t complaining or saying much, just asking for a receipt and printout. We were in room 1130 on the first floor. If you review the cameras, you’ll see two people enter our room and somehow unlock the door with their wristband.

Our family had a blast during our overnight stay in a double room with several families. The amenities were awesome, and our room was clean and comfortable. After two days in the water, the salt-chlorinated pool helped keep our eyes from getting completely wrecked.
