We had an amazing stay at Hakuna Matata and would absolutely recommend it. The house is roomy and very well kept, and it was so clean that I never saw sand inside, even though it’s right on the beach. We had plenty of space in the fridge, freezer, and cupboards for the week’s food, and parking for our rental car was easy right by the hostel. Irving was a warm, welcoming host, and everyone else staying there was friendly too. It’s a smaller hostel with a lovely feel, like a real home away from home. The cleanliness was beyond anything I expected from a hostel.

The free surfboards and bikes were a nice bonus, and there’s a very friendly dog who loves attention. The beach is right outside and works well as a beginner surf spot. I booked a private room and really enjoyed my stay. It had the feel of sharing a home with a few roommates, like a typical hostel, and the spaces were very clean with friendly staff. I hadn’t realized the hostel caters to female travelers. It wasn’t a problem, but it would be helpful if the website said so.

We booked Hakuna Matata Hostel expecting a bed and a good location, and it made our Maui trip incredible. We felt so welcome and at home, and met wonderful people who filled the trip with laughter and so much love. The hostel was clean and better located than we expected. Management was kind and responsive. Irving the manager, Daniel the owner, and all the tenants helped make it one of the warmest and safest places I’ve stayed while traveling. I can’t wait to go back. Don’t hesitate to book!

The hostel was super cozy, with a big backyard and a lovely place to hang out. You can borrow snorkeling gear, surfboards, and paddle boards, and there’s plenty of parking if you have a rental car. The beach is right out the back, and it’s just a two-minute walk to Lahaina life, with shops, restaurants, and bars. Everything was extremely clean and well organized, and Irving welcomed us warmly. WOW is the only word for it. I’d absolutely book this hostel again if I return to Maui.

The shared kitchen lets you prepare your own meals, though only two burners work, which was my one complaint. The place was very clean and close to downtown Lehaina. I made friends during my stay, and the women working there, Natalie, Laura, and Sophie, were friendly and helpful. This was my first trip to Maui and, so far, the best trip of my life. Hakuna Matata lived up to its name. It’s a short walk to the beach, and they provide snorkel gear, surfboards, and bikes. I’ll definitely go back.
