Tropic Motel

For the price, this was a really comfortable place, and the owners were very nice. My kids loved the pool, where we spent most of our time. This was our stopover on the way to Nevada, and now we plan to stay at this motel every time we drive there.

The staff were friendly. I looked at two rooms, both spacious but a little dated, and both had dead roaches. It seemed they were working through the problems by fumigating the rooms, painting, replacing carpets, and doing other repairs.

The maintenance person was polite and effective, and the place was quieter than motel 6 (palmdale), although it smelled just as bad. I didn’t have a furnace the first night. The people seemed nice enough, but honestly, I might’ve been better off sleeping in my car. I asked for a weekly rate and got quotes that differed by $80. The wood door was flimsy, with no deadbolt or latch, light visible all around it, and about an inch of space underneath. The mattress was basically weak springs covered with thin cloth. The carpet looked original and was in terrible shape, and the room reeked of cigarettes. Bars on the bathroom window seemed to offer as little protection as the front door, maybe less. The toilet seat was broken, and the mini fridge seal was rotten and coming off.

There was a wet spot in the middle of the bed, hair on the pillows, and the non-smoking room reeked of smoke. It was obvious they don’t wash the bed sheets. The door was so broken it barely closed. I’ll never stay here again.
