The Whitlock

We had a peaceful stay in comfortable rooms with nice beds, and there are beautiful spots to sit outside. The place is quaint and quiet, with a great location within walking distance. Coffee, tea, plenty of snacks, and fruit are available in this property's sitting room. The continental breakfast is served at a nearby sister property, whose staff were very helpful and friendly. There was no staff or on-site service during our midweek stay. The building has three floors and no elevator, so choose your room with that in mind. The bathroom was adequate, but counter space and outlets were limited.

The restaurant was closed the whole time I was there, and the doors from outside were left unlocked all night, which didn't make me feel safe. I couldn't even watch regular TV, since Roku only offered subscription channels. The hotel is run down and poorly maintained, with minimal service. The location is great, but I won't stay here again.

The location is the big draw: an easy 1.5 walk to Tanglewood, with Lenox right there too, and you can skip the traffic and get some fresh air. The patio is useful, and the sign and curb appeal looked promising. But the value for the price didn’t work for us. I understand rooms are limited in Lenox and demand jumps, but a premium rate should come with a more premium experience. Our room had no decor or personality, and barely fit a queen bed and two small nightstands. The staff were young, and every local question I asked sent them to Google. Breakfast also fell short for a B&B. On Saturday at 6:45 a.m., the sanitation truck woke us as it backed into the driveway with its high pitched warning beep to collect rubbish. The room could be small if it were better appointed, and breakfast should be much better. Otherwise, the price needs to come down to feel fair.

Our room was tidy, but not clean: there were cobwebs in the bathroom, a missing heating vent cover, spiders in the shower, and hairballs behind the toilet. The bar area was closed, and although they offered a coffee station, there was no cream. We had nowhere to sit outside our room except on a cold porch. The heat was the biggest problem. The first night they said it hadn’t been turned back on after the weather changed and sent me to look at a hallway thermometer. The hall was warm, but our room wasn’t. The next day they said our room used a mini split and would send someone to check the settings. They said it had been checked while we were out, but we were still so cold we wore sweats and socks to bed. They eventually offered another hotel, but it was late, we were unpacked, and we only had one night left. I was extremely disappointed. Thankfully, even with our 38th wedding anniversary stay being uncomfortable, we’ve had enough years together to enjoy ourselves anyway.
