New Victorian Suites

The whole building felt neglected, and the third floor smelled strongly of food the entire time. The screen on the window was torn in half, and broken seals made it impossible to see out. The shower curtain was falling off the wall, so I had to shower without one. The sink strainer was gross, and the gym was disgusting, like it hadn't been vacuumed in years. Carpet was frayed in the rooms and elevator. A rough place. Never again.

For under $75, you get comfortable beds, internet, a fridge, microwave, landline phone, TV, and a separate sitting area with a sofa, coffee table, table, and chairs. Breakfast was great, and the laundry works. The location is convenient, and there's a pool, though it and the building were being remodeled, which was disappointing. No one was at the desk, but you can call. The elevator felt a little sketchy, though renovations were in progress.

The internet is advertised as free high speed, which would help when there's no cell service, but it keeps dropping and kicks me off while I'm trying to make important calls. The man at the front desk was really rude, while the woman was much nicer and more understanding. I haven't tried the food because of how I felt when we first arrived. Thankfully, we brought some of our own, especially for our daughter.

We only booked because it was late on our drive from Denver to Chicago, and a couple of sites rated the hotel well. Check-in was smooth, and the front desk staff were nice. The place was a bit rundown, musty, and grimy, but we don't usually mind that for a budget stay. Our room looked like it hadn't been cleaned at all. There was hair on the bathroom floor, the toilet wasn't properly clean, an old bar of soap was left in the shower, and the towels looked used. The bed looked slept in too, with flattened pillows and hair and dirt in the sheets. We slept on top of the sheets using our own bedding and pillows. We were close to downtown, but lots of people were parked outside overnight, and several seemed to be living in their cars. Someone kept propping the security door open. Breakfast was about what you'd expect. We got the keycard at 12:30 a.m., and it stopped working by 8:30 while we were unpacking the car. Like others have said, if it hadn't been so late, we'd have asked for another room or a refund and gone elsewhere.
