The setting is beautiful, and I’m already figuring out when I can come back. Our Conservation Corps group was looked after so well, with kind hosts who shared plenty of information about the area and made sure we had things to do. There were sweet dogs and bunnies to pet, plus swings, basketball, and lots of other games. They had everything we needed and then some. Easily the most welcoming campground I’ve stayed at, and I really appreciated how much care went into making our visit fun.
I came back to the area mainly to fish for trout, and even with some old spots unreachable because of road closures, the owner suggested a few alternatives. One of them paid off with rainbow trout weighing 5 1/2lb and 3 1/2 lb, so I had a great trip. I lived nearby for 23 years, and it was nice to find the main roads rebuilt since the hurricane. Some smaller roads are still being worked on, but the campground roads are open and in good shape. The staff were outstanding and happy to offer local information. I stayed in a camping cabin. It was clean and comfortable, with a small frig and a space heater for chilly nights. The shower and toilet are less than 100 steps away. My Fitbit says I got my steps in every day lol. The place is quiet, especially after dark, and they’re making lots of improvements and remodeling during the day while keeping everything clean. There are tent and RV sites, plus cabins with different floor plans, and the campground is near Newland, Spruce Pine, Banner Elk, and plenty of places to visit. There’s also a dog park, a playground, and a camp store for things you forgot to pack, twice.....like mustard and ketchup. I only took a picture of the 5 1/2 lb trout, unfortunately. Highly recommended as a place to stay with lots of attractions around.
The cabin was stocked with what we needed and was clean, and the kids had a great time with the playground and outdoor activities. We’ve stayed here before in other cabins, and the campground has new owners now. They’ve brought in modern conveniences and luxuries while keeping the place’s character. They were friendly and really helpful. On the first day, we couldn’t get the gas fireplace going, and they came over quickly to show us how. The next morning our car had a flat tire, and they took time from a busy day to help. We had a great vacation and will definitely return.
The Gorge hikes we wanted to do were all close by, and the sites were a good size. Chris and Antoinette went out of their way to make our stay special, even giving us free t-shirts and a shuttle to the neighboring Bank Lick Creek Tavern and Taphouse. This is the best campground we’ve stayed at, and we’ll absolutely be back.
The facilities are what keep me coming back. Each bathhouse unit is a full bathroom with its own sink, toilet, and shower. Everything was clean, heated, and had plenty of hot water. The grounds are pretty, with a playground, volleyball, basket ball, gem mining, and more. The camp store is well equipped, and the service is excellent. I’ve stayed here several times over the years. My first visit was at a primitive tent site and impressed me enough that I chose a deluxe site with electricity and water this time. Every site has been well kept and had good privacy. A wonderful place to stay, and I’ll keep coming back when I’m in the area.
