After Best Western Premier North Hollywood turned us away, my small service dog and I were left outside at sundown. Every other nearby hotel was sold out, so finding somewhere else to stay felt like a miracle. In the end, leaving may have been a blessing in disguise, but I shouldn’t have had to scramble like that. I’d called it a strict policy, but they said service dogs weren’t allowed and refused to check me in, even though my dog is a service animal. It was already late and getting dark. Being a new hotel doesn’t make the service any better. They were definitely not accommodating.

The only real drawback was the limited parking in the building. The staff were flexible, though, and even willing to move their own cars to make space. If there’s no room, you can park outside on the main road. Without traffic, Hollywood is about 30 minutes away and LA about 45. I’d happily stay here again. The rooms and service were great, the decorations made it feel like an art gallery, and there’s lots of new technology and electronics in the rooms. The bed and pillows were great too.

The pool was nice, though small, but getting to it meant going through the exit stairwell because there was no access door. That stairwell opens into the back of the bar and restaurant, so you have to walk past diners in your swimsuit. The windows facing the pool area also did little to block sound. I could hear the owner and his friends partying there, despite the 9pm to 9am quiet hours that seem to apply to guests, not the owner. They were swearing loudly while my kids were in the pool. I hope they had fun. See the pictures of the party. The bathroom setup was another problem. Its wall facing the main room is translucent glass, which is a nightmare when more than one person shares the room. The bathroom’s accent light can’t be switched off, and the motion-activated main light blasts you with midday brightness if you get up at night. There’s no way to disable it, and the glass wall means everyone else gets woken up too. The shower leaks across the bathroom floor. I was going to mention the WiFi problems, but those felt minor next to everything else. The facility may be new, but this was one of my worst travel experiences. I’m not coming back, and I’d urge others to think twice as well. This might work if you’re staying alone, don’t need the parking garage or WiFi, bring really good earplugs, and have low standards for lodging.

I found the look a bit too modern for my taste, more industrial than I wanted. It’s a newer hotel trying to be hip and chic, and it does okay. The rooftop bar looked appealing for younger travelers, but it was closed due to COV19. The location is somewhat close to Universal Studios and within walking distance of the subway, which goes to Hollywood, downtown LA, and the studios. Parking costs 9 per night, and the neighborhood feels a little unsafe after dark. At reception they checked me in under two names and billed me twice, but the manager sorted it out after I called.

I’d reserved a room for over a week and called ahead to confirm that bringing my registered service animal was okay. I was told it was. But at check-in, the front desk worker acted strangely about the animal, brought out the manager, and I was refused service because of it. I believe denying me was illegal because my animal is registered and protected under federal law. The manager was extremely rude even after I explained that she couldn’t legally deny me. She said I was making it all up. As I left, she and the desk worker huddled together and whispered behind my back. I’ve never felt this disrespected in a business. I can’t stress enough that you shouldn’t book here.
