The ocean and Korean Friendship Bell views were breathtaking, and for a budget stay it was a great place. This was my first hostel, and I figured I should try one while I’m young enough to climb into a bunk. My sister and I got a private room with two beds, which suited us perfectly. It was affordable, and the basic room felt decent for the price and type of place. We had a key and could leave our belongings in the room during our several-day stay. No food or drinks were allowed in the dorms, so the area stayed pretty clean. The shared bathroom had two stalls, two showers, and two sinks, and the main area was clean and well kept. The staff were mostly kind and helpful, and the other guests were friendly. The walls were thin, though, and everyone sounded sick. We could hear people hacking through the night, which was a bit of a buzzkill since we worried we’d catch something.

It’s a little out of the way, with no store or restaurant very close, but the ocean views are incredible. The hostel feels quaint and welcoming, and the staff are thoughtful, kind, and helpful. I’d planned to go exploring, but liked it so much that I stayed around most of the day. The other guests were really nice too. The Korean friendship bell was beautiful, and I enjoyed a picnic nearby overlooking the ocean. There are lovely little spots on the property to meditate and watch the wildlife. My favorite hostel so far, and the price for a private room was just right. I can’t wait to come back!

HI Hostels are always a place I like staying, and this one was no different. The location was cool, the room was fine for a hostel, and the bathroom was perfect. The staff were super friendly. Breakfast wasn’t anything special, but it’ll get your day started. There was a basketball court right outside my window, and people playing loudly at 6 am meant I could hear everything. That wouldn’t stop me recommending it, though. If you want nightlife nearby, this isn’t the spot. If you’d rather have a nice local place with amazing views, it’s perfect.

Friendly, helpful staff and a breakfast that made for a happy start. I came here to get some quiet, and it delivered better than anywhere else for that. The bed wasn't especially soft, but I didn't mind. The shared room stayed pitch dark with the curtains closed, then got bright as soon as I opened them. A morning walk with views of Catalina Island was fresh and beautiful, and the big Bell and pagoda felt peaceful. It's not for nightlife or hanging around town, but it's a cheap, restful place to sleep before moving on.

The biggest drawback is getting around: buses from Pedro can take 2-3 hours to reach places. Still, I had a great stay at South Bay Hostel. The staff were helpful, other guests were nice, and I had fun getting a ride to the Beach with a couple of them. I liked being near the Korean bell and Angel gate park. The lockers, showers, and facilities were good, with plenty of kitchen and fridge space. Breakfast was nice, they also sell eggs, and the Friday pasta dinners were fun. A good place to start if you're staying in LA. I'd rate it five stars if travel from the location were easier.
