Historic City view Suites

I lived here 20 years ago, back when Candice and George owned the place. It’s changed a lot since then, and seeing it again brought back plenty of memories. My old unit had its own kitchenette and a small bathroom, and I remember the patio view of Downtown Los Angeles. I didn’t want to give the place a low rating, especially since I haven’t been back in two decades. Just reminiscing.

I needed a place as a solo traveler for an event nearby, and this worked out just right. The rooms are small apartment-style units with their own bathrooms. It looks like it may have been the Monterrey Inn before. The listed phone number wouldn’t connect, but once I arrived I called out at the window above the door and the Property Manager came to greet me. Pleasant stay, and I’d book again.

I’ve never stayed somewhere worse. There was no key ready at check-in, and I only got in after someone finally answered the door. The room was extremely hot, with just a fan. No wardrobe, kettle, or kitchen. This is a residential building with a few guest rooms, not a proper hotel. A drawer front came off when I opened it because it was rotten, and there were half-empty chip packets in the cupboard. The water pressure was too low to wash my hair, and I got just two small hand towels for six days. There was one light, so the room was badly lit. The area felt unsafe, with a man at the bus stop carrying a machete, and it was noisy every night. Dirty, no real customer service, absolutely appalling. Beware.

Six weeks after I’d stayed and paid, they tried to charge $260 to my debit card for no legitimate reason. I hadn’t booked another stay. That’s attempted theft, and I’ll be filing a police report. Update: they’ve now tried charging the card three separate times. Don’t stay here. It’s smoky and dirty, and the accommodation doesn’t have the amenities its ads claim. NOT HAPPY!!!
