The Hollywood Hotel

The breakfast cost us $42, and the service was slow. The food wasn’t any better than a free Holiday Inn breakfast. Parking was about $40 per night, too. The rooms and hallways felt old, and the elevators smelled bad, moved very slowly, and only worked about half the time, so we started taking the stairs. When we arrived, the toilet was very dirty. We told the receptionist the next morning and asked for it to be cleaned, but it was still the same when we got back that evening. Google Maps calls this a four-star hotel, and Booking said breakfast was included. I’d rate it closer to two or three stars.

I ended up seeing a few dozen ants on the bathroom floor three days into the stay. They weren’t there when I first arrived, and if bugs don’t bother you, fine, but it was a little alarming. I’d read about ants in reviews and wasn’t too worried, but I do think the owners should look into it. The room itself stayed really clean the whole time, and I don’t blame the staff. I only booked here last minute because my original hotel cancelled, and they were able to take me for five nights. The price was amazing, the staff were lovely, and the room had a fridge, microwave, big bed, big TV, and a nice balcony looking over the courtyard. I couldn’t figure out the shower at first, but a staff member explained it without making me feel silly. That ant issue was the only downside for me.

Michael at the front desk was the bright spot. He was friendly, helpful, and clear about what we should do next. The rest of the front desk staff were dismissive and sometimes hostile, brushing off our questions or giving vague answers. We stayed with my mother over Valentine’s weekend for my birthday, expecting a special upgrade, and the experience was upsetting. We were charged another $50 on top of the $80 we’d already paid for two nights of parking. They said we hadn’t pressed a help button, though it wasn’t clearly marked or explained. When we asked about it, someone said, “Everywhere in the world has a help button to push.” Guests shouldn’t have to guess what the hotel hasn’t explained. Breakfast wasn’t included either. We had to buy separate vouchers for the attached restaurant, which hadn’t been made clear up front. There wasn’t even complimentary coffee in the room, so you had to come down and pay for it. We paid a premium and left feeling frustrated, overcharged, and undervalued. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel to anyone expecting professional service, cleanliness, or basic care.

I felt very safe staying here on my own, and I’ll recommend it to friends. My room was clean, with a shared balcony and a spacious bathroom, and cost just over $100 for the night. The man at the front desk, I think his name was Melvin, was welcoming and really helpful. He even suggested places for dinner.
