Hyatt House LA - University Medical Center

Thanks to the young woman at the front desk, Jokara, for being so welcoming. I wish the hotel had usable luggage carts. They all seemed wonky, and maneuvering one became a workout. It would also be nice to have a shuttle to a metro. Freight trains pass often and can block the closest campus entrance until they go by, though you can drive around to another entrance. I appreciated that they'd expanded the tea selection at breakfast.

It felt completely safe here, which I appreciated as a woman traveling. Being close to student housing was nice. The rooms are simple but have what you need, and there's plenty of space to work. The pool opens late, while the gym is open 24/7. Breakfast is free and good. Parking is in a structure across a small street, with college housing around, so crossing over wasn't a worry.

We'd stay here again. The price was decent, the staff were accommodating, and our studio felt like a small apartment. It was clean and comfortable, with cozy beds. The fridge worked well and was clean. There were some dishes but no silverware. We asked for more towels and linens, and staff were happy to bring them. There is outside noise, including trains, so keep that in mind. Breakfast was very acceptable, with yogurt and berries, eggs, sausage, coffee, juices, and a good range of food. The hotel is about 12 miles from Universal Studios. The area near USC Medical Center and campus looks industrial and a bit odd, with a little transient activity, though that's everywhere in LA. Staff were friendly, and USC police respond if there are issues. At night you need to scan your room card to get into the lobby. Parking is across the street in a garage about a minute's walk away, and it costs extra. The spots are clearly marked for Hyatt House. Just be aware of that.

The room was huge, basically a 600-square-foot apartment, and worked well for our group of five. It had two bedrooms, two queen beds in the bedroom, a couch in the living area, two TVs, and a fully equipped kitchen. It sleeps more like five than six, though six could work. We paid $837 for three nights including fees but not parking. For that price, it was good value and would suit a family. Breakfast had a nice selection of hot and cold food, including yogurt with frozen berries, and there was lots of seating in the big lobby. I'd stay here again with five or six people. The room and bathroom were very clean, and check-in and checkout were smooth and friendly. Housekeeping never came during our three-night stay, apparently we had to request it. One cleaning would've been useful. The second-floor hallways smelled musty. The hotel is right by USC, but this part of East LA isn't great. It took about 30 minutes to drive to Universal Studios in traffic. The train and other outside noise were loud. Parking costs $38 a day, but has in-and-out access and the gate is up. There are a few EV chargers on the first and second levels.
