Starlight Inn La Brea

I’ll update this once management deals with the disruptive guests. They’ve been honking the red jeep, banging on walls, dropping things by my door, yelling, and blasting music. It seems they checked in just to disrespect the property and other guests. I hope management enforces the right to operate by reminding them they’re breaking the terms of their stay and that the business can cancel it with no refund for the violation.

The bed was comfortable and I liked the location, but that’s about all this place has going for it. We’ve stayed twice. The first visit was okay enough to make us try again, and I liked that they didn’t charge a deposit. But they charged us another $50 for my service dogs. The man said their two dog-friendly rooms were already taken, even though the website says they allow service animals. Later reviews suggest they’ve charged people with service animals before too. I consider it a scam. We got the same room as last time, two weeks earlier. There was the exact same glob of conditioner in the shower corner, and the towels were dirty. Walk barefoot and the bottoms of your feet will turn black. They don’t clean. I’ll never come back, and I really hope the hotel faces legal consequences. Don’t waste your time.

The outside is kept pretty clean, and the rooms and staff are okay. The beds, or the newer mattresses, look like they could use replacing. One man is kind and understanding when a guest is going through domestic problems, but the other two staff members don’t show much compassion. Right now, though, this is the only place my daughter has to stay.

After a very long flight, all I wanted was somewhere to lie down until morning. I’d give this “establishment” zero stars if I could. I’m not sure what their problem is with people of color, but they could at least try to hide it better. Places like this seem to share a vibe of “we’ll take your money but don’t like your kind.” Check-in was quite an experience. A woman was lying on a mattress where you’re supposed to check in. Then a man “greeted” me by making sure I was alone and speaking to me like a child. It’s not just what you say, but how you say it. After an exhausting day, I wanted rest, not a manager repeatedly interrogating me about the rules and asking the same questions when I’d done nothing wrong except show up. The room smelled strongly of urine. There was hair in the fridge, dirty towels, and questionable spots in the shower. I went to call the front desk, then realized there was no phone in the room. You’d think that was basic, along with clean towels and sheets, but they seem more concerned with who has visitors or pets. I didn’t feel comfortable in the bed, so I slept on top of the “comforter.” I left hours before checkout and went to the airport four hours ahead of my flight, figuring I’d sleep on the plane. Avoid this place if you can, especially if you’re Black or a person of color. It feels like they only care about taking your money.
