The Dixie Hollywood

The location was great, just steps from the metro station and shops, and close to Hollywood. Check-in and checkout were quick and easy, and the staff were friendly. They had free coffee for a few hours in the morning, and the Hello Kitty room came with free cup noodles. The room was so cute, with lovely little details and good value. It's older and a bit run down if you look closely, but clean and comfortable. Since it's a motel, all the doors and windows face outside, so other guests or cars coming in could wake light sleepers at night. It had all the amenities, including a mini fridge and microwave.

This check-in could have gone much better with clear information from the start. We arrived to check in, so this was NOT a no-show. We'd booked a king-bed room, then asked to switch to a two-bed room. The front desk said manager approval was needed and management wasn't on duty, so they couldn't make the change then. Since we needed two beds right away, we booked a second room. They never clearly told us upfront that the original reservation was absolutely non-changeable and non-refundable. Instead, they kept saying they had to ask the manager, so we thought there might still be a way to resolve it. Even later that night, they said they needed to ask. Only after it was too late to make a reasonable decision did they tell us there could be no refund. We didn't even keep the key to the original room, as the desk took it back, so we reasonably thought it wouldn't be used or activated. Still, we were charged for it, including a resort fee on the unused reservation. The property felt more like a roadside motel than a typical hotel, and we didn't feel secure or comfortable there. The lack of transparency and delayed decision caused unnecessary cost, wasted time, and an unpleasant stay. I'm leaving 1 star over that and the safety and comfort concerns.

As soon as we entered the room at check-in, we could all smell mold. I raised it with staff, who offered another room, but it had the same smell. I'm allergic to mold and very sensitive to it. Staff agreed about the smell but refused a refund. There was no manager available after hours, and staff said they couldn't do anything. We left for another place. I gave them plenty of time to get back to me, but heard nothing. I've reported them to LA City and County for corrective action. Don't stay there and waste your money.

We've stayed here a couple of times before and love the pool, so it was disappointing that this trip went the way it did. We were charged the expected $79 “destination fee” at check-in, but the pool was unusably cold. On the first day, my foot turned purple just from putting it in the water. We thought maybe they'd just filled it, but checked every day of our 4-day stay and it never warmed up. The desk staff were rude when we arrived early at 1:30 on check-in day. One woman said something like, “well check in isn't until 3pm,” and was very short, so we went to lunch and came back. Another family was sitting on the couch when we returned, and I thought they were waiting, so I approached the counter. I got snapped at again and told to “just have a seat I will help the first.” After the pool had been freezing for 2 days, I emailed the hotel about it and got no reply. At 10:15 on our last night, we went to sit by the pool with a glass of wine, but security told us it closed at 10. Finally I went to the desk to ask why we'd paid for pool access if we couldn't use it. When I said how cold it was, the response was “that's just the normal temperature.” That felt like a blatant lie, since we'd swum during our last two stays and the temperature had been fine. She offered to let us speak to the manager the next morning, but our flight left early. A reply to my email, an apology, or even a partial refund for the pool fee might have made me willing to try Dixie again. It's unfortunate because the hotel is a cute little spot. This is how places lose loyal customers.
