The complimentary breakfast was the biggest surprise. I've come to expect the bare minimum from hotel breakfasts and usually skip them, but this one had food people would actually want to eat, so I gave it a try. I'd rate it five stars compared with breakfasts at similar hotels, since it was so much better than those, not because it was a five-star meal. The hotel is conveniently close to the East Riverside exit on I-90 in Loves Park. My room was cleaner, more comfortable, and nicer than I expected. Check-in and checkout went smoothly, and although the parking lot suggested the hotel was about half full, it stayed quiet during my visit. I hadn't stayed at a Holiday In in a long time, and this was a pleasant return.
The room description and photos can be misleading if you're counting on a pull-out bed. Our Two Queen Suite had a couch but no sleeper sofa, even though the online pictures showed one. Luckily, the front desk gentleman quickly brought us a rollaway, which worked perfectly and saved the night. The staff were helpful, friendly, and professional throughout, and the hotel felt welcoming. Everything was spotless and well kept, so we had a very pleasant stay.
The maintenance issues were hard to miss. There was what looked like old paint or scuff marks on parts of the wall, the cabinet door trim was chipped and worn, and the windows showed signs of mold. One elevator was out of service, while the other was freezing inside, like a walk-in freezer on a windy 15°F day. The third-floor ice machine near the elevator was so loud it sounded like a lawn mower and disturbed anyone nearby. Still, the front desk staff were genuinely friendly and made check-in easy. The room was quiet, the beds were comfortable enough, and the hot breakfast was a highlight. I liked the daily menu board and the bean-to-cup coffee makers, which made fresh, tasty coffee. There was a good range of food too, including omelettes on some days, bacon, scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, biscuits and gravy, and juice. I stayed at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Rockford-Loves Park in late December 2025. It's conveniently located off the interstate and worked as a budget-friendly, no-frills overnight stop. I'd consider coming back if the maintenance gets addressed, since the place could use updates and some care.
The rooms were clean and nice, and breakfast was awesome. Logan went above and beyond to help us, while Shanna and Ciara were both very nice. Housekeeping kept our rooms and trash taken care of. When I visit again, I'll stay here.
The rooms had dated decor, loose bathroom tiles, a very noisy fridge, and almost no water pressure, with only cold water. I also kept seeing a sign saying the front desk was unattended, and the manager said staff weren't required to be there. It felt like we were on our own. My daughter was in town for a sports tournament and needed to be at the sports facility around 7-7:15 in the morning. I asked if she could take something from the breakfast bar, but was told they don't do that. We did have breakfast the next day and saw grab-and-go muffins, fruit, and yogurt. The manager said those are only available if a group arranges them ahead of time. I asked about reimbursement for the things I paid for but couldn't use, and the front desk woman made faces and laughed, then told me the manager would say no. She was right: the manager made excuses and blamed me for not having the pool or breakfast, saying I should have known. The pool being closed at check-in was outside anyone's control, and the person who checked us in was lovely, so at first I thought the stay would go well. Instead, I felt disrespected, lied to, and blamed for the lack of service. People in our party stayed at the Home2suites across the street and had a lovely experience. Sleep matters too much to me to consider this hotel again.
