The room itself was fine, with a dated 90s look: popcorn ceiling, old wallpaper, and an electric coil stovetop. That didn’t bother me much. What did was how little thought Vail Resorts seemed to give to the customer experience. It was my first night, and everything about getting there felt amateurish. I expect the skiing to be wonderful, but first impressions last, and this one really sucked. I booked at the Mountain Lodge. A few days before the trip, an email said they’d see me at Jackson Gore, the other base a few miles away. I called Okemo to check and was assured I was booked at Mountain Lodge, and told I could drive there. After eight hours on the road, I found a poorly lit, nearly empty area with no useful signs and drove around without finding anything. My reservation email linked to a page that was supposed to answer questions, but the link returned a 404. Farther down was another link saying I needed to pick up the keys at the Jackson Gore front desk, 1-2 miles away. I got two physical keys there, which I have to bring back on the last day. The loading area was badly lit too. There was a sign, but it wasn’t lit and headlights didn’t reach it at a useful angle. I wouldn’t recommend arriving after dark. Once I found the entrance, I had to carry my bags, groceries, skis, and everything else up two flights because my unit was on the second floor. Then I drove to a lot maybe 1,000 steps away. Each unit has a designated space, but there’s no lighting, so I had to pull into spaces to read the numbers. From there it was another 1,000 steps along the road to the room.

We spent the weekend here and won’t be back. The directions from the main lodge to our room in a different building on the other side of the mountain were wrong, so we drove around in the dark for an extra half hour. Once we got in, the TV had a note saying cable service was overdue, and there was no cable, internet, or hot water. We called the front desk several times. One employee told us to run the water for ten minutes, but after about ten seconds with the faucet turned to hot, it shut off. Staff said they’d talk to the property manager and get back to us, possibly to move us to another room at no charge. Nobody followed up. The customer service was awful. Whoever is responsible for maintaining this property should be ashamed. Save your money and go elsewhere.

Sharon R was especially helpful when we ran into a difficult travel situation. She went well beyond what we could have asked and was so willing to accommodate us. We’re very grateful for her hospitality. Our stay at The Mountain Lodge at Okemo was great. Being near the ski lifts meant we could easily return to the room for lunch or breaks, and the rental shop was right outside. We checked in after hours at the Jackson Gore Inn, and everyone we dealt with there was friendly and helpful.

Be careful when booking. Vail Resorts confirms a room and building and takes non-cancellable payment, but once you arrive at Okemo, where you actually stay feels like a roll of the dice. Bait-n-switch. The room has an old Vermont lodge feel. The carpet is new and the unit is looked after, so it wasn’t bad.

The day before our stay, I was told there’d be no heat or hot water because of a boiler problem. The explanation about the hot water kept changing, but there was no heat either way. We made other plans, which was clearly necessary, and then the property wouldn’t give me a full refund because I hadn’t cancelled 30 days ahead.
