The breakfast alone is pure excellence, homemade and made to order. I’ve been coming to Dowd’s for over 20 years, and whenever I’m in the Upper Valley, this is where I stay. It feels authentic, comfortable, welcoming, and relaxed, with that straightforward New England character. It isn’t fancy, so look elsewhere if that’s what you want. I think it’s superb.

There’s a lot of character at Dowds Country Inn, and we had an excellent stay. We especially appreciated the hospitality and breakfast. We hope to come back once their tavern has reopened.

I’m reviewing the event experience only. I didn’t stay at the Inn, though the rooms and building looked nice from what I saw, so this may not say much about staying there. The staff apart from the manager were friendly and helpful, and the bartenders did a great job. Planning and management seemed disorganized, though. They ran out of glasses and couldn’t get more or improvise for over half an hour. The woman I believe was the owner, who managed the wedding we attended, was the rudest person I’ve dealt with. Her sour, abrasive attitude really brought the place down. Nearly every guest seemed to be talking about it, and many actually left their rooms at the inn to move to another venue. It’s a real shame. I understand that managing an event is stressful, and I understand her frustration with a couple of 20-year-olds trying to drink a few months before they were legally allowed. I don’t hold that against her. She had liability to consider, and I’d have been frustrated too if it were my business. That wasn’t the problem. Even ordinary, routine interactions were hostile for no clear reason, starting as soon as people arrived, not after a long night.

The staff made us feel like family, and Duncan makes a mean omelette. Our room was nicely appointed, with a super comfortable bed. Breakfast, included in the room price, was cooked to order and offered a very nice range of choices. There’s also a nice Italian restaurant just a couple of doors down. If you’re in the area, this is the place to stay.

i love old farmhouses, and this was a nice little place for my two-night stay. The rooms were clean and stocked well, with a fan, ironing board, and air purifier in the closet for guests. There were books around to read, and i liked seeing hikers’ little messages on the wall by the dining room. I missed breakfast because i was visiting family at Dartmouth. On Monday night, before everything flooded, Tami stayed late to check me in and give me a short tour. 5 stars, recommended.
