Murray Hotel

The rooms are small, which makes sense for an older hotel, but the pool was very clean and just what we needed after a full day of walking and biking. It’s more like a large hot tub. The location is good, near the east side of downtown, with public bike racks for overnight parking and a market on the corner. Check-in and checkout were easy, and the front desk staff were courteous and helpful. We’d stay again.

The fudge is the smoothest on the island, so use the 20% discount when you get the chance. They do run out of some flavors, so if you spot one you like, go ahead and get it. Breakfast doughnuts are delicious, while the coffee from the modern dispenser is average. I had a lovely stay at the Murray and probably won’t shop around next time. My queen room was comfortable, with dense, soft cotton sheets. It may have been a bit above standard Queen size, but it was the smallest room available when I booked, and the rooms are relatively small. If you’re a couple who want to move around with some elbow room, ask for a bigger room. The bathroom was clean and nice, with a large shower enclosure; leaving its door open gave me extra space to get dressed. There were no unpleasant smells, just a little fresh fudge scent in the lobby. The staff were casual, friendly, and attentive, and answered my questions. If I come with someone next time, I might upgrade, since I booked at the last minute while following another group of friends.

Room 234 gave us a bit of a spooky morning. I woke up to the faucet running and heard knocking. I’d heard that this place, like much of the island, has paranormal activity, if that’s your thing. We had a very nice weekend. The staff were accommodating, and the location is right in the middle of the main town. There are no fridges or coffee machines in the rooms, but the front desk can store anything you need kept cold. Breakfast and lunch are available in the lobby for a charge, plus they give out free coffee and doughnuts. The lobby fudge shop has, in my opinion, the best fudge. After a long day biking, the decent-sized outdoor spa hot tub was great. Highly recommend.

We’d grown up getting fudge at the Murray, but had never stayed there before. This time we loved it: clean, cozy rooms, great staff, and a perfect location. The spa pool was especially nice after a long day exploring the island.
