Vishal Patel made a real difference during my stay. He was polite and attentive, and it was clear he cared about guests being comfortable. The rest of the staff and management were friendly and helpful from the time I arrived. My room was comfortable and cleaned carefully each day. The carpet was spotless, there were no bad smells or visible damage, and the shower had a strong stream that felt great after a long day. I didn't have anything negative to say about The Quality Inn and Suites in Macomb, Illinois. I'd gladly come back, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a welcoming place in Macomb.

They were able to give me a room even though I hadn't made a reservation, and the staff were nice. But on both mornings there was no hot shower water. It only got lukewarm, too cold for me to shower. After I called the desk the first morning, I was told over breakfast that “he turned on the boiler.” I don't understand why it wouldn't already be on with guests there. The next day, the sink had hot water but the shower still didn't. I told them I didn't think $100 a night was fair for a room without a hot shower, and was told, “I don't have the authority to decide that.” The chair in my room looked like it had been picked up off the street beside a dumpster.

The indoor pool has been listed as “Closed for Season” since I last stayed in July, breakfast was the same every day, and the juice tasted fermented. The ice had icicles hanging around the entrances and other spots by the building, so it felt like one could fall and impale someone. In the shower there was still pubic hair, and even late at night the water barely got hot no matter how long I let it run. Fixtures were broken, and the furniture looked like it had never been replaced. I've stayed here over the years with friends, and after two or maybe three brand changes, it still hasn't been renovated. Not even a rug or carpet has changed. The branded towels, bedding, and very few amenities are about the only differences. The place is just poor quality overall. Good luck getting help from corporate. They say they can't do anything because it's “privately owned.” You'd think a company would look into whether its brand's standards were being met when customers keep complaining, but that doesn't seem true for these low end hotels. This isn't your average Choice Hotel. When I raised concerns, the owners were disrespectful and accused me of trying to scam them. My room had its fire alarm removed, with the wires dangling into the room. I told the owner at the front desk and got immediate backlash. He said I could leave without a refund or stay. I stayed because I'm poor and couldn't afford somewhere else. They eventually brought in a replacement alarm, but it looked like it had caught fire before.

The rooms were clean, and after a long workday my husband and I found it okay as a place to sleep. Still, the basics in the room were a letdown. There were only a few squares of tissue and one nearly empty toilet paper roll, with no spare, so my husband had to ask the desk for more. A room with two queen beds had just one washcloth. The toilet seat was about to come off. It would've been easy to tighten, but there was urine and fecal matter around the hinges and screws, so cleanliness needed attention too. On the second night of our two night stay, they took the used towels but again left only one washcloth for a room meant for four, and no hand soap. At checkout we were charged an incidentals fee. We won't stay there again. We love Quality Inn and Suites locations across the states and they’re usually our first choice.

If you're visiting the WIU campus, this is a good Macomb option. The rooms are clean, parking is easy, and breakfast comes with the stay.
