Hampton Inn Memphis-Southwind

The bed was very comfortable and the AC worked great. My room was decent, though it’s ready for an update. The flag out front was my biggest complaint. I had a perfect view of it, and it badly needs to be retired.

The waffles at breakfast tasted more homemade than most hotel waffles, and the room was neat and mostly clean when we arrived late at night. Still, the stay was pretty mediocre. Ants were crawling on the sofa bed when we opened it, and it was stained with something, though the sheets covered the marks. There weren’t extra blankets or pillows. The fridge had odd dust on it, and the bathtub had brown spots. Hand soap was missing from the sink and was in the shower instead. There was conditioner but no shampoo, and the body soap was missing. The AC was so loud it made it hard to fall asleep.

I’ve never stayed at a hotel that locks the front gate and makes you use a one-way entrance that only allows entry and exit. The AC in my room didn’t work, so I was miserable all night. The pillows felt like sleeping on fitted sheets, definitely not Hilton quality.

We had to stay here for our kids’ soccer tournament. The location looked run down when we arrived, and the front desk staff were unpleasant. Marijuana and musty smells filled the halls. Our room was old and disgusting, the AC was loud and barely moved air, the fridge didn’t work and smelled when opened, and there was no soap. Doors slammed all night and kept waking the kids. When doors closed in other rooms, our whole bodies shook. The ice machine on our floor was broken, too. The people staying there made things feel worse. My husband saw what he believed was a drug deal beside the hotel. At midnight on our second night, four people were fighting in the parking lot. I woke to blood-curdling screams and was scared for my children’s safety. I called the front desk four times and nobody answered, so I called 911. The dispatcher already knew about the fight and said they were backed up, but I explained there were hundreds of families and children there for the tournament and feared there could be guns. The dispatcher noted that, and it seemed to raise the priority. The yelling continued for at least another hour, and I never heard a police car. In the morning, staff said they’d read the report and the people had guns, but the morning team didn’t know whether police had arrested them. I’d never stay here again, and felt gross lying in the beds. Shame on Hilton for allowing this.
