Hampton Inn Memphis-Walnut Grove/Baptist Hospital East

The room was freezing when we entered, and the halls and room smelled like old foot odor. The place felt dirty enough that I didn’t want to take my shoes off. The elevator room buttons were out of order, and the TV didn’t work. A staff member tried four remotes before deciding it was the TV, but couldn’t replace it. He said there was no manager on site on Saturday and that he’d leave a note for the manager to call about a possible discount. Six days have passed without a call. We replied “yes” to an email asking if we wanted to speak with someone, and then heard nothing. Very disappointing, since Hampton Inn is usually our first choice when we travel. The desk clerk also couldn’t recommend anywhere for dinner.

For a Hampton Inn, this was cheap, and I can see why. I half expected the sign to peel off as we drove away and reveal a Motel 6. There wasn’t a fridge or microwave in the room, which was a first for us since we stay at Hampton Inns almost exclusively. The shower was the nicest part, but the bathroom otherwise looked very dated, with lots of old water damage on the walls and ceiling. The box springs seemed broken and made a ton of noise whenever I rolled over. Front desk staff weren’t especially friendly, and breakfast was pretty half-assed. On both mornings there were no hard-boiled eggs or fruit, even though their containers hadn’t been used, and the milk was empty. The scrambled eggs were sitting in water. I’d look elsewhere if I were in the area again.

We drove seven hours from another state with our family, adults and kids, after booking and paying in advance. At arrival, Ashley at the counter simply said there were no rooms available. There was no cancellation email, and she showed no sense of responsibility. When we asked for the manager, she said she was the manager at that moment. She told us to go to other locations, gave us an address, and expected us to search hotel by hotel. We were frustrated, and she laughed. Such irresponsible behavior.

The cook was so sweet and nice, but the service otherwise was rude, and I won’t be coming back. We’d heard a lot of complaints about cars being stolen. There was something dark on my roommate’s and my covers, and boogers on the shower curtain. The curtains were filthy and stained from top to bottom. There were also reports of bed bugs at the hotel.
