Sonesta Simply Suites Memphis East Poplar Pike ​

The kitchens had been stripped bare, with no glasses, utensils, coffee maker, or anything else. I had to ask a staff member for a fork and knife. They kindly explained that the hotel was preparing to renovate under a new chain, but nobody told me before I arrived. There was no notice on the website or my booking confirmation, which was frustrating. At night there was no staff around, and my key wouldn’t open either the front or side door. The back door never locks because it’s broken, so I was lucky I could get in that way. The hotel also needs refurbishment. I’ve stayed with Sonesta Suites regularly, and this was a low point for the brand and a real disappointment.

The room felt like a one-bedroom apartment and had everything I needed. It was clean, and the air conditioning worked perfectly. I arrived just before the front desk closed, but the agent was glad to help and made sure I was settled before she left for the night. Everyone was courteous and nice. I’ve been happy with my Sonesta stays in different cities so far.

I haven’t stayed at this Memphis location yet, and the bad reviews have me having second thoughts. I went to the Poplar Pike location to ask about availability. The clerk said they had two rooms, but when I asked to see one, she told me there wasn’t a room available to view. She also seemed annoyed by my questions and was short with me. A couple of guests gave me an uncertain, so-so impression of their stay. Outside, parking looked limited, there didn’t seem to be security, and the place felt dark and secluded. The rates seem high for Memphis and for the condition of the hotel. Reviews make other Sonesta Hotels sound cleaner and cheaper.

Stay at your own risk. The front desk made me feel like a peasant. There were roaches in the room, and hot water lasted ten minutes at best. Service wasn’t close to three-star quality. Save your money, two thumbs down.
