My daughter's wedding was fabulous, and most of the wedding party stayed at Hill House. As fans of Angela Lansbury and "murder, she wrote", we were excited to stay there. Checking in Friday was easy, and Sylvia was friendly, helpful, and informative. We loved our vintage room 109. It was comfortable and spacious, with a garden view. A few things were frustrating: we couldn't get the TV working properly, there was no mini fridge, and the low toilet was almost unbearable. My 86-year-old mother struggled to maneuver in the toilet and tub area. We also wished there had been a continental breakfast in the lobby to go with the delicious coffee, and that the upstairs restaurant had been open. Getting food meant trekking into town. All in all, we enjoyed our stay.

The room was very spacious, with two queen beds on the ground floor looking out over a pretty field. There was a nice deck outside the bedroom, though it wasn't private and could have been used as a walkway by other guests. That only happened once. The shower worked fine despite cracks in the bathroom tile and sink. This is a charming, stately property with a historic, vintage feel. The drive in and the lobby felt like a mystery novel. It's a scenic, convenient setting and a good deal for the region if you're fine with do-it-yourself lodging. I stayed three nights, a nice change from camping. Silvia and Curtis at the front desk were quite nice, which made me feel welcome as a solo traveler. There are few services: no refrigerator or microwave, no room service, and you have to request fresh towels at the desk. There's no hairdryer in the room, but you can borrow one from the front desk. The desk closes at 10 p.m., and the TV was small, maybe 21 inches. I raised my rating from three to four stars because the staff were so nice. As of July 31, 2022, I was told renovations were "coming soon," so check whether there's construction on the property.

We've stayed here three Augusts in a row for our regular Mendocino family reunion. The location can't be beat, and the rooms are consistently clean, with reliable service and helpful staff. There aren't many amenities, but it's the most affordable option we've found near downtown, and we keep coming back for that consistency. After our latest visit, the staff went above and beyond to return something I'd left in the room. I really appreciated that, and would recommend staying here.

Our first-floor room had an ocean view, a sliding door, and a porch that was lovely to sit on at sunset. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable, though the pillows felt a bit stiff. Hill House has a charming, quaint atmosphere, and the front desk staff were so friendly and welcoming.

The gardens and scenery around the property are gorgeous, and we found the staff very nice. Our stay was comfortable, even though the place needs some renovation and is short on creature comforts. If you like character and a quirky feel, its charm makes up for what it lacks.
