The main house has lovely woodwork, furniture, and windows, and we enjoyed its sitting room, games, and well-stocked bar with a friendly bartender. We didn’t see the main house guest rooms, though. Our stay was in room 18 in the Carriage House, and for the price it was a disappointment, nothing like the advertised upscale experience. We expected a charming, old-fashioned room. Instead, the furniture and decorations felt outdated, mismatched, and thrown together without much thought, like a college student’s first apartment furnished with hand-me-downs from grandma or garage-sale finds. Two mismatched end tables had been turned sideways for nightstands. The glass closet door was cracked and glued back together. There were crocheted decorations and cheap plastic flowers. The shower stall was stained from years of use and not being cleaned well; the spa tub was discolored and missing parts. The common areas in the Carriage House also looked neglected. There were cheap old appliances, windows sealed with masking tape, sloppy electrical work, and rocking chairs used as dining chairs. Things in the kitchen were thrown in haphazardly. There was a stove but no cookware or dishes, a dirty fridge with food left by previous guests, and an overflowing garbage can. Breakfast felt like penny pinching: one slice of cheap store-bought bread and half a sausage patty, plus strawberry jelly so old it had turned brown. The server was attentive and friendly, the eggs were prepared well, and the quiche tasted good. Still, we were so underwhelmed that we ate breakfast elsewhere on the second morning, even though it was included. The breakfast room was nice, but the owners seem unable to resist filling it with plastic flowers and crocheted items. The stay might have been fine if we’d expected average accommodations at a low price. The Inn is advertised and priced as an upscale venue.

For our one night near whitetail, room #14 suited my wife and me well. It was large, quiet, and nicely furnished, with a fireplace that made it cozy. Tomi was great, and so was breakfast. We enjoyed wandering around the massive mansion and had a great stay. We’ll be back soon.

Our wedding and stay were amazing, and we’ll definitely return for anniversaries. We spent two nights at Mercersburg Inn in room #1 - Prospect View, which was spacious, clean, and cozy. The balcony had a great view of the church at the academy and the mountains. The huge bathroom worked well for getting ready, and had shampoo, conditioner, soap, a makeup wipe, shower cap, q-tips, robes, and clean towels. There were water bottles and cookies in the room, plus chocolates from the elopement package. Tomi, the innkeeper, was wonderful from our first tour onward. She helped us picture the wedding and showed us different ceremony spots. She was accommodating while we planned and made sure everything went smoothly. We held the intimate ceremony in the lobby between the stairs, then had cocktails by the lobby bar, which offered a great selection of liquor, wine, and beer. The bartender was quick and made great drinks. Dinner was amazing. Tomi took our orders in advance so we could get the food we wanted, and she and our server/bartender were great. The flowers and cake were made by people who often work with the Inn and delivered there on our wedding day. My bouquet was exactly what I wanted, and the cake was delicious.

The meal at Byron’s Dining Room at the Mercersburg Inn was memorable, served in an elegant setting. Every dish was cooked just right, with rich flavors and lovely presentation, and the wine selection was wonderful. Knowing the chef trained in France made the skill behind the cooking even more impressive. You can taste the passion and expertise in every bite. Highly recommend!
