Quality Inn & Suites Middletown - Newport

For a quick weekend visit, this place did the job. It was close to everything around the area, with a clean room and the basics I needed. Free breakfast in the morning was a nice extra. It isn't fancy, but works well if you just need somewhere simple to sleep.

We found what looked like chocolate crumbs under the sheets the first night, and after we reported it they moved us to another room. The next day the cracked hair dryer wouldn't work. They said someone would come fix it, but nobody showed up. The manager had already been rude, telling me I had to report the problem for them to fix it, and I told them I was doing that then. There was also something spread over the office chair that I sat in, though I don't know what it was. The indoor pool was freezing and had layers of dirt on the bottom. A hole was above the light switch in the ceiling, and there were holes in the hallway walls. When we left, a group of young kids were in the fitness room without an adult. The staff seemed surprised when we said we wouldn't come back. I would give the hotel 0/10 if I could. The staff seemed clueless about what they were doing.

I spent 27 days here waiting for my apartment to be ready. The water was always lukewarm, so after a day of work it was hard to feel clean. The elevator broke, and I had to haul my things up and down the stairs. The parking lot was like an ice rink, with no salt and poor plowing. Also watch for the $5 daily fee, which was only on the paper at the desk and nowhere else on the site. The owners clean the rooms themselves to save on labor, but they also charge a $150 smoking fee even if you don't smoke. They say if they smell smoke anywhere, everyone in the whole hallway gets charged when they leave. A desk attendant even walked around knocking on doors, and I invited him into my room to see that nobody was smoking. Since the owners clean the rooms, there's no way to dispute the charge. If you do smoke, you might as well smoke in your room. BEWARE!

The location on Main Street was handy and very close to Naval Station Newport. Staff at the desk were friendly, and housekeeping kept things clean. The bedding was comfortable, although I don't think the beds were true queens, and the mattress wasn't great for someone who likes a firm bed. Breakfast had plenty for a quick start, including waffles you make yourself, eggs, cheese omelets, sausage, toast, bagels, yogurt, fruit, cereal, tea, and juices. Kids would really enjoy it. The lobby aquarium was a cool touch to see coming in. The room was quite dim, some outlets didn't work, and the showerhead needs replacing, though the water temperature was great. WiFi was extremely slow, and it felt like they expect you to pay for an upgraded version to get usable internet. The business center was out of service too. Outside, the entrance wasn't well lit, and an abandoned property on the grounds made the place feel neglected. Friendly staff, a good location, and a few nice touches, but maintenance and amenities need attention.
