I’ve usually found a reason to stop at the Rose, but the last seven months have changed that. The casino floor now runs only from 10 AM to 2 AM, and on checkout morning I couldn’t even cross it to reach breakfast before opening. Security told me I’d have to wait for an escort or walk around outside to the restaurant door, which would be rough on a winter morning around -10 degrees. That left no chance for an early gaming session, and after breakfast I only got to play $20 before I had to check out. I left feeling like the morning I’d planned never happened, and I don’t expect to return soon. I may try Windriver Casino instead, since I think it’s open 24/7. Other changes have piled up too. The $10 gaming and breakfast vouchers are gone, most Game King poker and keno machines have been removed, and only five to seven remain with very few games on them. Smoking is now allowed on the casino floor. There is a small non-smoking area with about 20 machines, but smoke still reaches it, and the ventilation left me smelling like an ashtray. A few new machines were due to arrive but weren’t installed, while 10 to 15 others were switched off or broken. Breakfast has changed as well. They no longer serve New York, sirloin, or T-bone steak and eggs, which I used to order often. Now it’s just prime rib and eggs. That was a surprise.

It feels safe here, with security around, and the employees are really nice. I find the gambling fun, and I like this place better than Wind River because it has a more relaxed feel.

The cafe is a good deal, with tasty food at reasonable prices, and I like how the casino floor is laid out. There’s a decent range of games too. The players club, though, hasn’t been worth my time. My win-loss statement shows over $3,500 played and 5,100 points earned, which got me just $5 in free play. Hotel stays don’t earn points, and they don’t send free-night offers either.

The rooms were comfortable, and the players club staff were fabulous. I didn’t spend much time in the casino, though I was given $20 to play and only got $10 because my card wasn’t working properly. I didn’t make a fuss about it. The place itself is really nice, although coming from the north it seems isolated at first, even though there’s a town nearby. Food was harder to sort out. The restaurant shut at 8, and I couldn’t find anyone at the snack bar, so we drove to the nearest town to eat. There was something about the staff that made us feel a bit unwelcome, even though they were nice. People were hanging around outside at times, but nobody bothered us.

The casino itself looked lovely, and our room was clean and very nice. But the rest of the night went downhill fast. We learned there was no alcohol allowed in the casino, the game tables weren’t going to open, and I don’t enjoy slots. My player key also didn’t work, and the young woman who gave me another one had an attitude. We’d been told at the front desk that the restaurant stayed open until 10, but when we went for dinner at 8:30 it was closed, along with the snack bar and store. We had nothing to eat there, so we drove ten minutes into town, where only fast food was open. Staff said we’d picked a bad night. We were just traveling through and had chosen to spend the night, so it was a shame that such a nice-looking casino turned out this way. They need new management.
