The Millwood - A Boutique Hotel

The airport location was good, but I left feeling deceived about the early check in charge. I arrived an hour before check in, and my room was ready, yet I was charged a fee. I checked the hotel website policy afterward. It mentions fees for late checkout, but says nothing about an early arrival fee. As written, I understood that an available room would be offered, with no indication there would be a charge. The property keeps its policies unclear until check in, then it feels like a rule is being made up on the spot. I don’t appreciate hidden fees.

I’m a travel LVN, and I’ve put off writing this for a while. Two years ago I met the owner, who was very nice and listened to my concerns about two bad rooms and how mean and rude the women who gave them to me had been. I’m African American, and I’m quiet, cordial, follow the rules, leave the room in good shape, and come for sleep before long work shifts. I feel they don’t want my skin color at this hotel. I’ve been told they don’t like African Americans. I have never treated anyone differently because of their skin color. I’ve had filthy rooms with no hygiene in the bathroom, a very bad smell, and a dirty microwave and room. Another time, I was put in a room with serious plumbing problems. The toilet wouldn’t flush properly, the bathroom sink didn’t work, and I had to wash my hands in the tub. There was no hot water the first day. I told Elizabeth and asked if she knew the room was like that. She said she’d heard something about it. I asked to move, but she said all the rooms were full. When I first arrived, they weren’t. I believe she knew and put me in there anyway. I can only stay one or two days a week, and I call once a week to see if a room is available. The two women in the office keep saying no, including that the first floor rooms are all rented. I often pull up and see only about two cars in the lot. The owner also told me I could get my mail there. I’ve been having some mail sent there for four months, but the grandson says there’s no room and no mail for me. Today a man working in the office told me they’d been returning my mail for the last two months. I’d been told I had no mail instead of being told the truth. I asked if the owner could call me. I have two cell phones, but they say he’s busy and won’t give me his number, though I had it before and misplaced it when I got a new phone. I don’t have this problem at Marriott, Western Plus, or Holiday Inn Express. I’m mixed with Irish, Creole, African American, and Caucasian on my mother’s side. I’m a clean, professional, educated young lady, and I don’t appreciate being treated this way.

A weather delay forced me to spend the night near SFO, and The Millwood worked out well for its price and location. The room was perfectly fine, with nothing to worry about or complain about. You can hear some traffic in the morning since it’s right on a fairly busy road, but it wasn’t too bad. If I’m stuck with a similar layover again, I’d stay there. I recommend it when you need somewhere for the night.

The food needs work. The egg was kind of slimy, and the sausage was dry. The afternoon front desk staff should smile and be pleasant so customers feel comfortable.
