Red Lion Inn & Suites Modesto

Sim greeted us at check-in and was a wonderful host, with an amazing personality. Nothing was too much trouble for him. The notices about construction made the place look a bit daunting when we arrived, but the room was a lovely surprise, the nicest room ever. It had a great bathroom and shower, plus a little area with a coffee pot, ironing board and iron, and hairdryer. The bed was big and comfortable, and we had everything we needed for a good night's sleep. This was our last road-trip night before going back to San Francisco to catch our flight home to the UK. The room was large, but it wasn't what I booked for, since it looked nothing like the online photos. I'd thought I was getting a suite, and the pictured spacious jacuzzi tub was actually smaller than most tubs at home. The water pressure was terrible, barely enough for a shower, and the temperature only got lukewarm. While the property is under construction, rooms are only accessible from the back, which is poorly lit, and the security fence is a joke. I parked at the neighboring restaurant because it looked safer for my car. If I'd known, I'd have stayed somewhere else. The room just wasn't worth the price.

The pool wasn't open, which was disappointing, but we still enjoyed our stay. The place is under construction and looks like a wreck from outside, yet the renovated rooms are lovely, very clean, roomy, and have a super comfortable bed. There are USB plugs and reading lamps on the nightstand, and the TV is decent.

I kept my reservation only because of the location and nearby attractions. The website pictures don't match the hotel at all. My room had been remodeled but was very dark, except for the bathroom, where the lighting was good. The shades didn't work, the hallways smelled bad, and the staff were rude. I stay in lots of hotels, and this is one of the five worst I've experienced.
