From the deck, watching fishing boats come in at golden hour, it feels like you’re a million miles from New York while still doing something very New York. The Montauk Yacht Club on Star Island overlooks the marina, and after the two-and-a-half-hour drive from the city, there’s a moment when the air changes, your shoulders drop, and you can breathe again. That’s what this place gives you. It’s classic East End, without flashy Hamptons polish or a need to impress. Just boats, water, sunsets, and some of the island’s best seafood. The bar cocktails are strong, and the bartender knows how to read the room. Rooms are clean and comfortable, nothing over the top, just what you need after a day on the water. The restaurant makes a solid lobster roll, and the raw bar is always fresh. Montauk has grown more popular, and some of its old fishing-village charm is fading, but the Yacht Club still holds on to it. No velvet ropes, guest lists, or attitude, just salt air, cold drinks, and the sound of the ocean carrying on as it always has. Everyone needs a place like this. Montauk is mine.
Watch out when booking through agoda. Agoda charged me a $100 “surcharge fee,” and then the hotel charged me another $100 at check-in for the same thing, described as access to all amenities, the fitness center, pools, shore cruises, and so on. The place itself is good. The people are friendly, the food is not bad, and the location is good.
We got married here, then returned for our tenth anniversary. The hotel has changed hands a couple of times since our wedding, but I think they’ve got it right now. The rooms are nicely decorated, the beds are comfortable, and the service is top notch. Highly recommend.
Mr. Peeters made us feel very welcome and got us into the room we needed with no fuss. He checked that I had everything for the stay and was impressively professional, going above and beyond. I had a great experience thanks to him and will definitely return.
We wanted a relaxing weekend away with our five-month-old, and assumed a place charging $1,100 a night would be more upscale. It wasn’t. There was a huge wasp flying around when we entered our room. We’d specifically requested a crib, but it was missing at first. When one was brought up, the sheets were visibly dirty. The loud DJ outside made it feel like we were sleeping next to the booth. We went to reception the next morning to ask for a different room. They did move us, but rushed us out of the room we had. We were also told we couldn’t use the main pool because it’s now “adults only,” and could use the pool down the road instead. That pool had no poolside service like the adults-only one. We could still hear the DJ in our new room later that night, though it wasn’t as loud. Then the people in the room next door started a party. I called the front desk, and someone came, but told them, “an annoying guest needs you to stop the party. Let me comp you drinks at the bar”. I had a five-month-old infant in the room and had paid $2,200 for two days. They didn’t offer us even a free breakfast or drink. Don’t waste your money. This is a glorified motel, and they’re not good at hospitality.
