Monterey Bay Travelodge

The room was beside the highway, and the traffic noise was really loud. The hotel wasn’t full, but they still put me there. The property is extremely well maintained, and while the shower is old and dated, maintenance gets a 10.

The room didn’t feel safe to us, so we checked out and asked for our money back. The manager only approved a 50% refund afterward. We’d booked a one-bedroom suite through a third party; the photos looked good and the price was okay, and we knew we weren’t getting five stars, just somewhere to sleep for the night. We’d completed the pre-check-in with ID and payment to speed things up, but had to go through the whole process again. At check-in there was just one person at the desk, with a long queue and phone calls he couldn’t answer. We’d been told we could park outside the room, but an old trailer was in the way. When we arrived, the door was open, which made us uneasy. The room looked like the photos in some ways, but less shiny, and the pictures hadn’t shown the outlet hanging out of the wall or the rusty areas. It seemed clean enough, but clearly wasn’t new. We went back to ask for another room and explained about the open door, but the desk clerk didn’t seem concerned. We had to speak to the manager to get the partial refund. We found much better places closer to town. Terrible hotel and service. Look elsewhere.

We left before completing the reservation after my daughter got sick two days into our stay. We were there for a family wedding and stayed in the Del Rey suite. The room smelled moldy, and the floors were so dirty that walking barefoot for under five minutes left our feet black. Nobody came to take out the garbage or bring fresh towels. I asked at the desk for towels and mentioned how filthy the room was, but nothing changed. This was the dirtiest hotel I’ve stayed at in the U.S., and I’d give cleanliness and service zero stars if I could.

I stayed almost a week and had no problems with noisy neighbors or stomping; we were on the first floor. The planes passing over the hotel were extremely loud every single night. When I arrived, I was unsure because of reviews about the bathroom and shower grout, but the shower wasn’t as bad as I’d expected. Its handle was rusty and clearly dated, and at about six feet tall, the shower felt less spacious than a regular one. Aside from that, I’d stay here again.
