Our stay at The Merritt Hotel in Monterey was extremely disappointing. Although the room was clean, it wasn’t worth the price. The old spring mattress was so uncomfortable we couldn’t sleep. The room was dark, the AC didn’t work, and the shower pressure was barely more than a trickle. The property calls itself historic, but it feels outdated and hidden behind a seven-story Marriott building. Its one positive is the location near the Wharf, though we could hear planes and cars. Hotels.com should not allow misleading photos and descriptions. This property doesn’t meet quality standards, and we’re requesting a reimbursement for the unacceptable stay.

The courtyard rooms were a relaxing place to sit and work online, whether for business or pleasure. At $333 a night, it cost more than I expected, though the conference hotels across the way were over $600. Breakfast was minimal, with a hard-boiled egg as the protein option, and parking cost $20 per night. If you’re visiting for business, you don’t need a car once in the area. It’s very walkable, as long as you can Uber or taxi in from an airport.

This was the cutest place we’ve stayed in a while. The rooms were nicely decorated and the atmosphere was amazing. They were comfortable, and I liked the continental breakfast room. I hope you get to enjoy it for yourself. Parking is limited, so arrive early.

We enjoyed our stay, helped by the perfect location within walking distance of downtown and cannery row. The building is old but remodeled, and it’s historic to the area. Our room was comfortable and nice, though it had a slight musty smell. As another guest mentioned, the heating system is awkward. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was cold but filling, with fresh fruit, hard-boiled eggs, plenty of breads, pastries, cereals, and as much coffee and tea as you wanted. Parking was cramped, with two fewer spaces than rooms. It was hard to maneuver a full-sized truck, and finding the driveway was a bit of a challenge. Booking.com didn’t list the $20-per-day parking cost, so it was a surprise at check-in.

We stayed three days, from April 11 to April 14, 2025. We visit Monterey often and have tried at least ten hotels in the area, but Merrit House Hotel has become our favorite. The room was clean and beautifully kept, and Rosine’s Restaurant is an easy walk away with delicious food. Breakfast was satisfactory, with boiled eggs, cereal, oatmeal, small muffins, danishes, coffee, and tea. The beds were quite firm, there’s no elevator for the upper floors, and breakfast could use more variety. Still, we particularly enjoyed our stay here.
