The room we got through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts after the upgrade was honored had plenty of space for us and our child, and it was comfortable. The hotel also marked our 10th anniversary with a bottle of wine, a nice gesture, though I expected better quality at a luxury property. Our request for late checkout was denied, which was disappointing since it’s usually an Amex FHR benefit. At Schooners, the food was a letdown: some dishes were much too salty and others bland. Valet parking was costly but expected. Still, charging over $40 to park and another $20 for EV charging felt excessive, especially when comparable luxury hotels offer complimentary charging. The location is beautiful, and checkout was quick with no line. But the emailed receipt never arrived automatically despite my request, so I had to call three days later to get it sent. Those service and value issues kept the stay from feeling like the luxury anniversary visit we expected.

We came to Monterey Plaza Hotel & Spa February 20-22 for our wedding anniversary and my wife’s birthday. Later we learned our daughters had arranged the room upgrade as a surprise. We went back to apologize for our initial misunderstanding about the room type, and Miranda Zubiate, Front Office Supervisor, was just as warm and gracious as she had been when handling it the first time. She dealt with the mix-up with patience, respect, and real professionalism. Miranda represents hospitality at its best, calm under pressure and considerate. The hotel is lucky to have her.

Right on the beach, with the aquarium and the rest of Cannery Row an easy walk away. The staff were kind and accommodating, and our room was comfortable and clean. I’d definitely come back.

We chose the garage by the aquarium for parking at $27 a night. I’m not sure what overnight valet costs, but the couple of blocks’ walk was fine when we needed the car, and parking there caused no problems. The hotel made check-in easy, brought our bags to the room, and had umbrellas available for our walks when rain was expected. Our room had everything we needed, was very clean, and the bed was super comfortable. Housekeeping did a great job each day, too. We loved staying here for three nights around New Year, especially with so much nearby, from the aquarium and trails to restaurants and coffee. We’d recommend it and stay again.

The rooftop fireplace, hot tub, and sauna made for a great place to unwind, and the hotel sits right in the middle of everything. The grounds and staff are lovely. Schooners serves some of the best clam chowder, and the rooms have both a kettle and a Nespresso machine. We loved the partial ocean view in room 1106 and slept with the window open to hear the waves. It’ll surely be Monterey’s best hotel. The showers need an upgrade, though. Hot water should be consistent, and the pressure needs to be better. Most people care about four things in a hotel: cleanliness, shower pressure, a comfortable bed, and cold AC.
