Baymont by Wyndham Muncie Near Ball State University

We spent Friday through Sunday here for Mother’s Day, and the people made the stay. They were friendly and respectful, always saying hello when we crossed paths and checking whether we needed towels or washcloths. Our room was 122. It felt like staying among good, down-home Kentucky folks. The place was very clean, and breakfast was awesome. I’d recommend it.

The change since my last visit a few years ago is huge. I found out the hotel has new owners, and whoever they are, they and the staff have been great. Everyone’s polite and checks whether we need anything. The rooms are clean, and while we were here they even brought in a professional carpet cleaner for the rooms and hallways. A real turnaround from what I experienced before. Great job!

The bed and pillows were comfortable, but that was the only bright spot in a stay that left me worried about both cleanliness and safety. A family member and I booked two rooms for Halloween weekend while attending a wedding. I hadn’t made the reservation myself, so I hadn’t checked the reviews. Had I known the location’s reputation, I wouldn’t have booked it. The lot was nearly empty on Friday, and parking cost extra. The hotel looked dated when I walked in, but I was willing to see how the room was. It smelled odd, everything had a layer of dust, and a bare bulb was hanging where a sconce should have been. The mirrors looked splattered, the lamp flickered when I turned on the heater, and the toilet handle fell off without me touching it. There was black grime under the toilet rim, a hair on the seat, and grime on the doors, handles, switches, and side table handles. I showed photos to the front desk and asked to move. The man gave me a key to the next room without an apology. That room was only somewhat cleaner. There were hairs wrapped around the shower spigot, and I had to sort through several towels to find one without hair or stains. The bedside lamp switches were sticky. I was too exhausted to complain again. At about 12:55 a.m., someone started unlocking my door. I had the deadbolt on, but there was no extra latch. It was an employee I hadn’t seen before. My room change hadn’t been entered into the system, so he didn’t know I was staying there. I was panicked. We checked out in the morning and got a full refund through the booking site. Trust the reviews. My experience sounds fairly mild compared with what others describe. I’m sure management has a lot to do with it. The place needs to be condemned. I included photos, look at them at your own risk.

The service wasn’t good, and the place smelled strongly of curry and other spices as soon as I walked into the lobby. The room was dirty, especially in the corners, so the cleaning didn’t seem thorough. They advertise breakfast as included, but there was hardly anything. I saw a waffle maker and a small fridge with maybe six or seven yogurts arranged to make it look full. When I asked for hot water for a tea bag, the man said they didn’t have any, though they had coffee. I wouldn’t recommend trying that or anything else they serve.
