Comfort Inn South Oceanfront

The staff were kind and extremely helpful when we had to reroute our vacation because of flooding along Rt 12 on Pea Island. We were able to get a room as soon as we heard the news, and making the reservation on the fly was easy. Comfort Inn South Oceanfront also allows dogs. That's where the good parts end. The room was technically clean, but very humid and smelled stale, like mildew or maybe dog urine. The AC struggled to help. One working elevator wasn't ideal, and the double beds were disappointingly hard. We know we were lucky to find a place in those circumstances, but the owners should invest in sleeping comfort when “comfort” is in the name. The staff were great despite a subpar product, which surprised us as IHG members.

My oceanfront room gave me a peaceful, healing place where I felt safe, comfortable, and cared for during my Thanksgiving visit to the Outer Banks. The team was attentive and professional, and met every need I had. Tavia and Sheena at the front desk stood out with their warm greetings, genuine smiles, and welcoming manner. The whole team seems to work hard to make guests feel at home. What began as a simple holiday getaway became much more meaningful. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the OBX, and will keep it high on my list for future trips.

We stayed in mid-September, a little off-season, though the hotel was still busy. We had no trouble with the elevator despite the earlier reviews, and the third floor seemed to be the dog floor, which suited our Bassett hound well. The location is excellent, the staff are friendly without hovering, and it's very pet friendly, with a resident cat too. A few small things weren't great: the breakfast sausage patties seemed undercooked, the eggs were bland, and the coffee was undrinkable. The lobby smelled strongly of fragrance, and our key card often took several tries to open the door. Still, I'd definitely stay here again.

We won't be returning. The price wasn't low, and the building feels old despite the renovation attempts. Several problems could have been prevented with better management and regular maintenance. During our four days, the elevator was out twice: one car didn't work at all and the other worked only intermittently, leaving us with several unpleasant climbs to the seventh floor. Parking was inadequate, so guests circled around and eventually parked in undesignated spots because there was no overflow plan. The room was noisy through thin walls, and the free breakfast was weak compared with Best Western or Fairfield.
