The lack of hot water was a major problem during our stay, and the way it was handled made it worse. From our July 3 arrival until 1:00 pm on July 5, there was no hot water on the property. On July 4, the shower was freezing at 8 in the morning, and other guests told us they had the same issue. We were told it would be looked into, but nobody apologized. At 5 pm there was still no hot water; someone was supposedly on the way, but the repairman never came. We ended up unshowered and late for dinner plans. We also worried about health violations and contamination since dishes were being washed on site. The FDA requires a minimum temperature of 95-120 degrees Fahrenheit, and with no hot water throughout the inn for 30 hours, it seemed unlikely those standards were met. We were moved between rooms after staff said we’d been put in the wrong one, then told again to move back downstairs. Nobody apologized or helped with our belongings, and I was blamed for being in the wrong room. I left my bathing suit and coverup behind while repacking. Instead of putting them in our new room, staff left the suit unfolded in the living room, a public space where anyone could take it. We’d booked the room only after discussing on multiple occasions that there would be a cot, but it wasn’t there. Workers aggressively asked whether we knew how hard it was to get one at short notice. We eventually got it, but it showed the inn’s disorganization and poor communication. We couldn’t find anyone to help with requests like getting more towels. The staff were often unfriendly and unhelpful, if there was even a worker on the property, and the so-called manager was hard to find. Housekeeping came in while we were out on July 4 but left our door unlocked. We had locked it when we left, and all our money, valuables, and belongings were left unsecured in a space anyone could enter since the front door has no lock. On July 6, after we’d been out for four hours and left dirty towels in the tub, housekeeping still hadn’t cleaned the room by 5 pm. When I asked the cleaner outside, she said she was “TOO TIRED to clean our room,” handed me clean towels, then asked me to bring out the dirty ones for her. Cleaning staff took breaks right outside our room, watching TV and videos loudly on their phones. Other guests knocked on our door looking for management because they hadn’t been told, even at check-in, that this was a host-less hotel. Management was there once in four days. I’d looked forward to a relaxing Nantucket weekend, but instead dealt with unhelpful, uncommunicative, unfriendly staff, cold water that forced me to reschedule plans, and other frustrated guests searching for basic help. I honestly couldn’t feel worse about the weekend, and I’m sad to have to report such poor service.

We’d eaten at the Summer House many times and always loved it, so on our recent trip my husband and I decided to splurge on two nights there. We left after just one. The room was tiny and had a musty smell, and the service was so poor. It was very disappointing. The place reminded us of somewhere that must have been wonderful in its heyday but has since lost its luster.

The Thistle Room is right on the street, and it was the noisiest room I’ve ever stayed in. Even with earplugs, I slept badly. For what it is, the price was way too high. The continental breakfast was all sugar and no protein, not even hard-boiled eggs or sugar-free yogurt. The shuttle to Siasconset didn’t stick to its posted schedule. The mattress, though, was high quality and firm.

We had two small rooms booked for the weekend, and the downstairs AC didn’t work or cool the room. Management wasn’t customer-friendly or accommodating. You can find a better stay for the money.

Awful. Going back to a place that was once wonderful can be a mistake; the memory is much better than what it’s like now. It was terrible in every way, and they don’t even care enough to ask what happened.
