The breakfast buffet is permanently closed, and the website still lists the Wake-up DoubleTree Breakfast in the Solaris Cafe as an option. Instead, you're sent to the bar or banquet room for table service that felt grumpy and unkind. It was an unpleasant surprise, and the bill came to much more than the buffet for food of the exact same quality. I took off one star for that. Food isn't the main reason to stay here, so dropping it to three stars felt unfair. Take my original review with a grain of salt. We've been coming for five years, about twelve visits in all, and this has become a family favorite. My wife spent decades managing hotels in midtown MNH and scrutinizes places pretty harshly, but she likes this one. Maybe Hilton Honors members get better rooms, though what we've seen other guests receive looks the same to us. The front desk is always friendly, the cookies are tasty and complimentary, the rooms are consistently clean and tidy, and it's always been a good value. My kids have loved the heated pool for years and, now 11 and 13, still look forward to it. In all those visits, the only small snags were once not having enough pool towels and once finding a treadmill out of service. Both were sorted out quickly. Some showerheads feel like they're shooting needles at your skin, but the water pressure is always good. I can't think of other complaints, though I guess some people just like to complain.

The second room was much more spacious, and despite the highway nearby and noise outside after 10 p.m., it was quiet enough inside to sleep. My first room, though, was dark and felt small. I was put in a corner room on the first floor after checking in and learning there were no king beds available. Two queens were fine, but I could hear neighbors playing loud music on the way there. As soon as I sat down, the smoke detector started making a bug-like noise, so I packed everything back up and went to the desk for another room. I booked through my company's website for a business trip. I'm still trying to get an emailed receipt by phone and have been on hold for more than 45 minutes with no answer.

Chloe at the front desk was friendly and knew her stuff, and Juan from housekeeping made us feel welcome. Marie also came out to check on us and asked for honest feedback, saying this was a new beginning and they needed to know what to improve. The restaurant experience, though, was awful. The server couldn't seem to bring a hot coffee and wasn't good with customers, either because he hadn't been trained properly or didn't care. The food was both overcooked and undercooked: the scrambled eggs came out fried, chopped, and brown, while the sausage wasn't cooked through. The beds were comfortable, but the furniture looked dated.

Marie came over to ask honestly about the food and service, and did her best to make up for what went wrong. I appreciated that, and Chloe at the front desk was nice and accommodating. Juan's positive personality was great too. I slept well in the awesome bed, though the room had a few dings, dated furniture, and scratched headboards. The showerhead didn't give a full spray. At Piebirds, the service and food presentation need work, and I didn't feel very welcome. Looking forward to seeing the room renovations.

We booked a room because of an unexpected death in the family. When we arrived a bit earlier than planned, we asked whether early check-in was possible. The receptionist, whose name I think was rose, was so rude that we left and went to a different hotel. I wouldn't recommend this place.
