Natchez Grand Hotel & Suites On the River

The location is the one thing this place has going for it. For the highest-priced hotel in Natchez, it was a huge disappointment. The pool was practically microscopic, and the green water didn’t help. The lobby floors were filthy, and the room’s TV was barely bigger than a computer monitor. We could see some potential if the place got more attention, but it felt neglected. The kitchen door was left open, and the filth inside was disgusting.

That balcony overlooking the river was just right for us, and having a hot tub in the room was fun. We also got drink vouchers for the lobby bar when we arrived, which was a lovely surprise. Breakfast was complimentary, pretty good, and came with delicious coffee. The $20 mandatory fee at check-in was annoying since it covers the laundry room and gym, neither of which we planned to use. The building looked beautifully decorated for the holidays, and the location couldn’t be better, but “Grand” feels like a stretch. Our room had belongings from previous guests, there was hair in the bathrooms, and trash on the balcony. The sink leaked across the counter, and the hot tub switched on in the middle of the night and woke us. The place feels dingy and worn, and cleanliness and upkeep are why I rated it lower. I’d love to see Grand Natchez renovated while keeping its historic charm, with stricter cleaning. We’d probably stay again at a discount like the Black Friday deal we used, but likely wouldn’t pay full price.

I’ve already stayed here twice and am looking forward to another visit. The Mississippi River views and the walkable location make it easy to find things to do nearby. The hotel has a nostalgic feel and looks lovely, and our room was clean. Staff were really friendly. The gentleman at the breakfast bar was especially hospitable and quick to help with whatever we needed. Don’t miss this place.

I booked through Expedia and only found out at checkout that I’d be charged for breakfast, parking, and TV, even though those are advertised as free. The amount isn’t my main issue, it’s the way these charges come as a surprise. Once you’ve booked through Expedia, you also can’t cancel without a penalty. Just letting people know: apparently having your card means they can charge for those supposedly free amenities. I don’t know whether this happens with every hotel booking site or only Expedia.
